Job Summary:
The Pharmacist will be responsible for managing and dispensing medications in compliance with medical prescriptions, ensuring proper storage, maintaining accurate records, and upholding the highest standards of patient safety. The role requires expertise in hospital pharmacy operations, regulatory compliance, and the ability to collaborate with doctors, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to ensure effective patient care.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Prescription Handling & Dispensing
- Review and interpret prescriptions provided by doctors.
- Accurately dispense medicines as per prescription, ensuring the right dosage, form, and strength.
- Check for potential drug interactions, allergies, or contraindications before dispensing.
- Counsel patients and caregivers regarding proper usage, dosage, and side effects of prescribed drugs.
2. Pharmacy Operations Management
- Supervise day-to-day operations of the hospital pharmacy.
- Ensure availability of all essential medicines, surgical’s, and consumables.
- Maintain proper storage of drugs as per standard protocols (temperature, humidity, etc.).
- Conduct regular audits of stock to avoid pilferage, wastage, or expired medicines.
3. Inventory & Procurement
- Monitor stock levels and coordinate with vendors/suppliers for timely replenishment.
- Maintain minimum stock levels of emergency and life-saving drugs.
- Verify supplier invoices and assist in procurement processes.
- Track expiry dates and ensure timely removal/disposal of expired stock as per guidelines.
4. Regulatory & Compliance
- Adhere to all statutory requirements under the Drugs and Cosmetics Act and other relevant healthcare regulations.
- Ensure proper documentation of narcotic and psychotropic substances.
- Maintain patient records and prescription data as per hospital policy.
- Assist in internal and external audits.
5. Patient & Staff Support
- Provide drug-related information to doctors, nurses, and other clinical staff.
- Support clinical teams with dosage calculations and medication protocols.
- Educate patients on discharge medication requirements.
- Participate in patient safety and medication error reporting programs.
6. Quality & Safety
- Implement and monitor Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for pharmacy services.
- Ensure compliance with NABH/NABL/JCI standards for pharmacy operations.
- Monitor and report adverse drug reactions (ADR).
- Train junior pharmacy staff on safe dispensing practices.
Key Skills & Competencies
- Strong knowledge of pharmacology and hospital pharmacy practices.
- Excellent communication and patient counselling skills.
- Proficiency in pharmacy management software/ERP.
- Ability to manage inventory effectively.
- Attention to detail and high ethical standards.
- Knowledge of hospital accreditation standards (NABH/NABL).
Qualifications
- Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) / Diploma in Pharmacy (D.Pharm).
- Valid registration with the State Pharmacy Council.
- 3–4 years of hands-on experience in a hospital pharmacy setup.
Working Conditions
- Full-time role, based in hospital pharmacy.
- Rotational shifts, including weekends and public holidays, as per hospital policy.
- May require on-call availability for emergency drug requirements.
Performance Indicators (KPIs)
- Accuracy and timeliness in dispensing medicines.
- Effective stock management with minimal expiries/wastage.
- Compliance with regulatory and hospital pharmacy standards.
- Patient and clinician satisfaction scores.
- Contribution to overall hospital accreditation and quality initiatives.
