Description:
POSITION PURPOSE

Provides safe, secure, and timely delivery and pickup of medications, supplies, and related pharmacy items for home infusion, enteral nutrition, long term care, and specialty pharmacy patients. Maintains accurate delivery documentation and custody controls. Protects patient privacy and product integrity during transport and delivery. Serves as a primary in person point of contact for patients and caregivers and is the face of pharmacy operations during deliveries, demonstrating professionalism, respect, and a high level of customer service at every interaction.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Knows, understands, incorporates, and demonstrates the Trinity Health and MercyOne Mission, Vision, and Values in behaviors, practices, and decisions. Assists the pharmacist in outpatient prescription services, including retail, specialty pharmacy, home health care, and nursing home services, as assigned by location and role. Completes scheduled delivery routes to patient homes, facilities, clinics, and other authorized locations using safe driving practices and required security procedures. Maintains chain of custody for all items from pickup to delivery, including required signatures, photo documentation if used by the department, and complete delivery records. Verifies delivery destination and recipient using department procedures. Obtains signature proof of delivery when required. Resolves “no answer,” refused delivery, address issues, and other exceptions per procedure and returns items to the pharmacy promptly. Transports medications and supplies in a manner that protects product integrity. Uses required temperature control processes for refrigerated or temperature sensitive medications and documents required checks per procedure. Temperature controlled transport expectations are a common home infusion requirement. Handles items containing patient information in a HIPAA compliant manner. Limits visible PHI on labels and paperwork to what is required. Protects items from loss, theft, or unauthorized access. HIPAA controls are a standard expectation for medical couriers. Transports controlled substances and other high risk medications using required security controls, including secure storage in the vehicle, minimizing stops, and immediate reporting of loss, theft, or suspected tampering per policy. Delivers home infusion medications and supplies and may support basic delivery related paperwork that must be signed at the home or facility when assigned. National pharmacy guidance recognizes drivers may support delivery and initial paperwork collection in home infusion settings. Performs pickups as assigned, which may include returns, recall returns, paperwork, pumps and equipment, and supply pickups from approved sites. Ensures returned items are separated and labeled per procedure and delivered to the correct receiving point in the pharmacy. Immediately reports delivery incidents and safety events, including vehicle accidents, temperature excursions, missing packages, controlled substance discrepancies, and privacy incidents. Completes required incident documentation. Performs daily vehicle safety checks and maintains required vehicle logs, mileage, fuel, maintenance, and cleaning documentation. Keeps the delivery vehicle clean and secured. Uses route optimization tools and follows dispatch instructions to meet delivery windows while maintaining safety and compliance. Provides professional customer service during deliveries. Communicates expected arrival times when instructed. Does not provide clinical counseling. Routes clinical questions to a pharmacist, nurse, or the appropriate team. Supports basic non clinical pharmacy logistical tasks as assigned when not driving, such as staging deliveries, restocking delivery supplies, printing delivery manifests, and organizing totes. Follows applicable requirements for transport of hazardous drugs if the driver is ever assigned to handle or transport hazardous medications. Hazardous drug transport expectations are addressed in USP< 800> and related guidance, and should be reflected in your SOPs when applicable. Maintains a working knowledge of applicable Federal, State, and local laws and regulations, Trinity Health’s Organizational Integrity Program, Standards of Conduct, as well as other Trinity Health and MercyOne policies and procedures in order to ensure adherence in a manner that reflects honest, ethical, and professional behavior.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Must possess a comprehensive knowledge of safe driving practices, delivery logistics, chain of custody documentation, proof of delivery processes, and customer service in a healthcare environment, as normally obtained through a high school diploma or equivalent, and 1 to 3 years of delivery, courier, logistics, or customer facing service experience. Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to meet organizational standards for driving eligibility, including required motor vehicle record review and insurance requirements. Must obtain and maintain the Iowa Board of Pharmacy Pharmacy Support Person designation and any other state registration required for this position based on assigned duties and service area, within established onboarding timelines, and maintain them throughout employment. Must be comfortable operating in a collaborative, shared leadership environment. Must possess a personal presence that is characterized by a sense of honesty, integrity, and caring with the ability to inspire and motivate others to promote the philosophy, mission, vision, goals, and values of Trinity Health and MercyOne.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must be able to set and organize own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently. Must be able to work concurrently on a variety of tasks/projects in an environment that may be stressful with individuals having diverse personalities and work styles. Work includes driving, loading and unloading, walking to delivery locations, and frequent entering and exiting the vehicle. Must be able to sit for extended periods while driving and tolerate frequent stops, route changes, and time sensitive delivery windows. Working conditions include outdoor exposure during deliveries, including heat, cold, rain, snow, and ice. Must be able to safely use material handling equipment such as a two wheeler/hand truck and, when available, carts or dollies to move supplies, coolers, pumps, and heavy loads.
ACTIVITY REQUIREMENTS

CONSTANT:
Sitting: Driving between delivery locations and return to pharmacy sites.
Standing: Loading, unloading, staging deliveries, securing loads, and verifying delivery items and paperwork.
Walking: Carrying items to delivery locations and moving loads using a two wheeler/hand truck, carts, or dollies; navigating buildings, stairs, and parking areas.
Talking: Communicating with patients, caregivers, facility staff, and pharmacy staff to confirm delivery details and provide required delivery instructions.
Hearing: Receiving detailed information through oral communications with co-workers, patients, caregivers, and facility staff, including delivery directions and exception handling.

FREQUENT:
Reaching: Extending hand(s) and arm(s) to place, retrieve, and secure medication totes, boxes, coolers, and delivery supplies, including loading and unloading from vehicle storage areas.
Stooping: Bending body at the waist while loading and unloading the vehicle, securing loads, retrieving items from lower shelves or bins, and placing items at delivery locations.
Lifting/Carrying: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally with a typical weight range of 0 to 20 pounds.
Fingering and handling: Using fingers and hands to scan items, operate mobile devices, complete proof of delivery documentation, handle paperwork, open and close totes, and safely handle packaged medications and supplies.
Pushing/Pulling: Using upper extremities to maneuver a two wheeler/hand truck and carts or dollies with moderate loads across varied surfaces, thresholds, ramps, and uneven terrain.

OCCASIONAL:
Climbing: Ascending or descending stairs during deliveries, including in buildings without elevators or during elevator malfunction.
Pushing: Using upper extremities to move carts, dollies, or a two wheeler/hand truck when delivering larger loads to facilities or internal areas.
Pulling: Using upper extremities to move carts, dollies, or a two wheeler/hand truck backward or maneuver them in tight areas.
Lifting/Carrying: Raising objects from a lower to a higher position or moving objects horizontally with a weight range of 30 to 50 pounds. This may apply when handling pumps, coolers, or enteral formula cases, depending on routes and assignments.
Handling heavy loads: Moving heavier items by using a two wheeler/hand truck, team lift, or other approved method when weights exceed routine lifting expectations, and securing loads to prevent shifting during transport.

VISUAL ACUITY REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to read labels, delivery manifests, patient identifiers as permitted, product labels, and other delivery documents.
Ability to use navigation tools and mobile devices to complete delivery confirmation, scanning, and documentation.

INTELLECTUAL/EMOTIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to maintain a high standard of courtesy and cooperation when interacting with patients, caregivers, visitors, facility staff, and co-workers, and to sustain satisfactory job performance despite stressful situations such as delays, weather, delivery exceptions, or difficult interactions.
Adaptability to situations requiring precise attainment of set limits, tolerances, or standards, including chain of custody, proof of delivery, and time sensitive deliveries.
Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing from one task to another without loss of efficiency or composure, including switching between route work and pharmacy support tasks as assigned.
Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information and follow privacy requirements during delivery and documentation.
Must be able to set and organize one’s own work priorities and adapt to them as they change frequently, and work concurrently on a variety of tasks in an environment with frequent interruptions and diverse personalities and work styles.
Must possess the ability to comply with Trinity Health and MercyOne policies and procedures.
Must be able to travel to various Trinity Health and MercyOne sites and delivery locations as needed.

WORKING CONDITIONS:
The position is performed in a vehicle and in pharmacy and patient care environments, including patient homes, clinics, and long term care or other facilities, depending on route assignments.
Work may include exposure to medications and supplies consistent with delivery operations. The driver does not perform medication preparation or sterile compounding functions.
The individual must be able to don and wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) in accordance with organizational policy when needed for safety, which may include gloves, masks, eye protection, and other protective apparel based on the delivery environment.
The role requires compliance with safety policies related to vehicle operation, lifting and material handling, temperature controlled transport when assigned, and incident reporting. If assigned to pick up returns or equipment, the driver must follow designated procedures and use required PPE. If assigned to pick up sharps containers or other regulated materials, additional training and controls apply per policy.
