Pharmacy Technician

Job Location/Schedule: Monday – Friday, weekends as needed / On-Site / San Diego, CA

Summary: The Pharmacy Technician provides pharmacy support services to clinical research participants under the supervision of the Pharm D and Principal Investigator. This role ensures investigational products (IP) are prepared, labeled, dispensed, and documented accurately while collaborating closely with clinical research coordinators, lab staff, and other site personnel to support protocol compliance and study timelines.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Receive, review, and verify prescription orders from the Principal Investigator to ensure study validity.
  • Prepare and dispense medications accurately in accordance with physician orders and study protocols.
  • Support pharmacological services by stocking, assembling, and labeling investigational products.
  • Assist clinical research staff by addressing inquiries and referring complex issues to the Principal Investigator or Pharmacist as needed.
  • Maintain accurate pharmacy inventory records to support smooth clinical trial operations.
  • Collaborate with CRCs, Lab Technicians, and Lead CRCs to coordinate investigational product preparation, dispensing, and administration during participant visits.
  • Maintain study-specific documentation for IP accountability, storage, and shipment in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  • Assist with site monitoring visits by ensuring pharmacy logs, records, and procedures are up-to-date and audit-ready.
  • Support training of new site staff on IP handling, labeling, storage, and dispensing procedures.
  • Communicate with site staff regarding investigational product availability, dosing schedules, and participant needs.
  • Ensure a sterile and compliant environment for medication preparation and dispensing.
  • Follow security measures and quality control protocols to maintain the integrity of investigational products.
  • Meet all study protocol requirements and deadlines, ensuring compliance with Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines.
  • Adhere to all company policies, protocols, and regulatory compliance standards to maintain confidentiality and integrity.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support the success of clinical research operations.

Education and Experience:

  • High school diploma or GED required; pharmacy technician certification (CPhT) preferred.
  • Prior experience in a pharmacy, clinical research, or healthcare setting is highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of pharmacy information systems, prescription processing, and regulatory guidelines related to investigational products.
  • Working knowledge of pharmacy information systems.
  • Experience supporting clinical research protocols, including investigational product preparation, labeling, and accountability.
  • Familiarity with site operations, GCP guidelines, and clinical trial documentation requirements.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with CRCs, Lab Technicians, Lead CRCs, and other site staff.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy in dispensing and record-keeping.
  • Familiarity and confidence with IRT systems and CRIO across multiple trials is strongly preferred.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:

  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT), preferred.
  • Maintain IATA and GCP certifications as required.
