Summary

Assists the Pharmacist by filling physician orders for medications for oral, rectal, topical and injectable use; mixes IV admixture solutions as required using aseptic technique in the Laminar Air Flow hood; types labels, prepares and files charge slips and performs other related duties.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Current State of Nevada Pharmacy Technician License
  • Successful completion of competencies in sterile compounding and chemotherapy
  • Basic computer knowledge
  • Automated pharmacy systems knowledge
  • Sterile Compounding knowledge, including hazardous drugs, or willingness to learn

Preferred:

  • Five (5) years previous experience in a hospital pharmacy setting
  • Pharmacy Technician National Certification

Essential Functions

  • Assists the Pharmacist in providing medication, drug information and pharmaceutical services to patients, nurses, physicians and other hospital personnel.
  • Prepares intravenous solutions and admixtures.
  • Maintains inventory of supplies and reorders them accordingly.
  • Assists in filling prescriptions.
  • Processes records of medications and supplies dispensed to patients or customers, computes charges and either enters them into the computer or forwards them to Information Systems.
  • Assists the Pharmacists in providing pharmaceutical care for patients ranging in age from newborn to the elderly. Must be able to identify and understand that there are dosage variations between newborn, pediatric, adolescent, adult and geriatric patients, and know to consult with the Pharmacist if any doubts or questions arise.
  • Aids in the training of Pharmacy Technician students or new employees.
  • Prepares select reports.
  • Receives and stores incoming deliveries of medication and supplies.
  • Rotates stock to ensure use before expiration date. Identifies and replaces outdated and unusable drugs.
  • Participates in departmental and organizational performance improvement and CQI activities.
  • Performs all aspects of patient care in an environment that optimizes patient safety and reduces the likelihood of medical/health care errors.
  • Maintains the Pharmacy Department in a clean and orderly manner.
  • Performs other pharmacy-related duties as requested or required.
  • Demonstrates ability to calculate figures and amounts relating to dosage calculations when filing various prescriptions ranging from the newborn to the elderly populations.
  • Demonstrates ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instruction furnished in written, oral and diagram form.
  • Demonstrates ability to deal with problems involving several variables in particular situations.
  • Performs assigned quality control activities on schedule.
  • Performs assigned training activities successfully.
  • Maintains professional, helpful and courteous relationship within the department and with other departments.
  • Compounded Sterile Preparations: Demonstrates knowledge and skill ensuring that pharmaceutical preparations are sterile, properly packaged, labeled and stored, and not outdated.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
