The Technician Manager of Access Services serves as a key front-line leader within UVA Health’s Specialty Pharmacy, overseeing the daily operations of the centralized Medication Access Services team. This multidisciplinary team, comprising Medication Access Technicians and Pharmacists, works collaboratively to ensure patients receive timely access to specialty medications through efficient insurance approvals, prior authorizations, and benefit coordination. The manager is responsible for providing leadership, including direct supervision, coaching, and professional development for team members. The technician manager builds and maintains strong working relationships with leaders, providers, clinics, and biopharmaceutical partners.
In close partnership with clinical teams and specialty pharmacy leadership, the Technician Manager contributes to the continued growth and advancement of UVA Health’s specialty pharmacy services and patient access initiatives helping to fulfill our mission of delivering accessible and affordable care to all patients.
Represents people leaders (hire/fire authority) with majority of time spent overseeing their area of responsibility. Achieve goals through direct and/or indirect reports.
Manages/Supervises professional level employees within a Job Area. Focuses on tactical and operational plans and strategy with short to mid-term focus. Develops solutions to moderately complex problems, and may escalate more complex issues to higher level management. Ensures that staff is utilized efficiently and daily work projects are completed on time and within budget.
The incumbent for this role can expect to:
- Implement and refine standardized access workflows to meet turnaround time expectations, ensuring rapid medication access for patients with chronic and complex conditions.
- Lead and manage the Medication Access Services Team (pharmacy technicians), ensuring timely completion of benefit investigations, prior authorizations, and reauthorizations.
- Oversee daily workflows and ensure team accountability and the consistent use of best practices for execution of the following critical responsibilities: prior authorizations, patient financial assistance, medication refills, patient appointments, and patient outreach
- Collaborate with pharmacy leadership team to align medication access operations with volume forecasts and clinic expansion plans.
- Implement and refine standardized access workflows to meet turnaround time expectations, ensuring rapid medication access for patients with chronic and complex conditions.
- Recruit, train, and develop MAT pharmacy technicians, ensuring competency in specialty access workflows and payer requirements.
- Support the growth of UVA’s specialty pharmacy services by ensuring readiness to capture volume. Monitor payer trends and proactively identify access barriers, delays, or denials, implementing solutions to minimize disruption to patient therapy.
- Establish credible relationships with stakeholders at health system partners including clinic and pharmacy leadership.
- Ensure compliance with URAC, ACHC, and payer-specific patient management program requirements
- Create a performance-based culture with defined metrics, scorecards, and quality assurance reviews.
- Drive initiatives to improve the patient onboarding experience, ensuring timely medication starts and reducing delays from insurance or authorization issues.
- Serve as a champion for patient advocacy, especially for those on high-cost, high-touch, or rare disease therapies.
- Improve already industry leading patient and provider net promoter scores (NPS)
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
Education: Associate's degree required; or combination of experience, education, licensure, certification in lieu of degree.
Experience: 3+ years of relevant professional experience, to include 1+ year formal management experience required.
Licensure: CPhT credential through National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) required, registration as Pharmacy Technician with Virginia Board of Pharmacy required.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job requires standing for prolonged periods, frequently bending/stooping, reaching (overhead, extensive, repetitive) and repetitive motion: computer keyboard. Proficient communicative, auditory and visual skills; Attention to detail and ability to write legibly; Ability to lift/push/pull less than 20lbs. May be exposed to chemicals.
The starting base rate for this role is $57,907.20 annually. Individual compensation will be determined by the selected candidate's qualifications, previous work experience, and/or education.
