Pharmacy Technician - Per Diem

Description:

The Per Diem Mail Order Pharmacist supports Brighton Marine Pharmacy’s member-only mail order and specialty operations by ensuring the accurate, clinically appropriate, and timely verification and dispensing of prescriptions. This role works collaboratively with other pharmacists, technicians, and shipping teams to meet service-level expectations, maintain audit readiness, and protect patient safety across a high-volume workflow.

Key Responsibilities

Dispensing & Verification

  • Verify prescriptions for accuracy and completeness (patient, drug, strength, directions, quantity, refills, prescriber credentials) prior to dispensing.
  • Perform prospective DUR: allergies, contraindications, dose/route/frequency, duplicate therapy, clinically relevant interactions.
  • Ensure “final check” accuracy prior to release for packaging/shipping (correct product, label, documentation, and required supplies).

Clinical Interventions & Provider Communication

  • Resolve clinical discrepancies and therapy questions; contact prescribers when clarification or alternatives are needed (e.g., non-formulary, dosing issues).
  • Provide drug information and counseling as appropriate (phone-based and/or written counseling support for mail order members).
  • Document clinical interventions, prescriber outreach, and outcomes in the pharmacy system per SOP.

Claims/Adjudication Support

  • Support resolution of common claim rejects (refill too soon, plan limits, PA requirements, eligibility issues) in collaboration with technicians.
  • Apply working knowledge of benefit design and adjudication to minimize delays and prevent recurring workflow errors.

Quality, Safety & Compliance

  • Document and report medication events (errors/near misses/ADRs) per BM Pharmacy policy; participate in follow-up and corrective action as requested.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable federal/state requirements, HIPAA, and BM Pharmacy SOPs.
  • Support controlled-substance dispensing compliance requirements as applicable to operations (Rx workflows, documentation, security practices).

Operations & Team Support

  • Provide day-to-day technical oversight and guidance to technicians and interns during assigned shifts.
  • Assist with cross-coverage where needed (e.g., production verification queues, call-back support, retail/member pick-up window as applicable).
  • Participate in training/orientation support and process improvement efforts when requested.
Requirements:

Education & Experience

  • Active, unrestricted Massachusetts Pharmacist license in good standing.
  • BS Pharmacy or PharmD from an accredited school of pharmacy.
  • 1 - 3+ years in mail order, specialty, high-volume retail, or closed-door pharmacy operations.
  • Basic understanding of pharmacy insurance adjudication and common reject resolution.
  • Proficiency with computers and standard business tools (Outlook, Word, Excel) and pharmacy systems.
  • Experience with pharmacy automation/workflow systems (e.g., ScriptPro or similar).
  • Experience supporting adherence/chronic therapy workflows and member outreach.

Skills & Competencies

  • Ability to work effectively in a high-volume community, mail order, and/or specialty pharmacy environment.
  • Applies policies/SOPs and clinical judgment; escalates appropriately.
  • Resolves non-routine issues efficiently to maintain turnaround time and safety.
  • Prioritizes work within shift expectations; minimal supervision on assigned tasks.
  • Strong attention to detail, sound clinical judgment, and reliable documentation practices.
  • Clear and professional written and verbal communication with providers, members, and internal teams.
  • Supports a high-touch, member-focused service culture.
  • Works effectively across pharmacists, technicians, shipping, and member services.
