Job Title: Phlebotomist/Laboratory Assistant
Department: Laboratory

SUMMARY
Performs blood collections on patients of all ages (venipuncture and capillary). Performs routine laboratory tasks related to processing blood and other lab specimens by performing the following duties. Performs EKGs, clerical functions and answers phones.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.


  • Follows laboratory procedures for specimen collection, handling, ordering and processing.
  • Demonstrates organization values in daily work. Interacts with all patients, visitors, providers and organization staff in a courteous, respectful and professional manner.
  • Centrifuges blood and otherwise processes lab specimens as needed for the tests ordered.
  • Performs EKGs, urine drug screen collections, and paternity specimen collections.
  • Sets up urine cultures on appropriate media.
  • Performs computer duties including order entry, specimen receiving, report routing, and others as needed.
  • Stocks, cleans and maintains laboratory equipment, supplies, and laboratory.
  • Performs related clerical duties including recording on logs, labeling tubes, answering the telephone, scheduling patients and/or procedures, and faxing/calling reports.
  • Considers age related factors in care, education, and evaluation of patients ranging from neonates, pediatrics, adolescents, adults and geriatrics. Applies knowledge of age-related factors appropriately in accordance with professional standards and departmental policies and procedures.
  • Supports the policies and procedures of the organization and the standards of the Joint Commission and Laboratory Accrediting agency as required for full accreditation.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE
Phlebotomy certification and/or equivalent experience and knowledge preferred.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand and use hands to finger, handle, or feel and may require long periods of time standing and bending. The employee frequently is required to walk, sit, reach with hands and arms, talk, hear, and smell. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. Continuous talking and hearing. The employee must be able to lift and/or move up to 30 pound waist high (accommodation can be made for this demand). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Exposure to temperature extremes, dust, restricted work station and violent behavior. Continuous odor, eye strain, exposure to chemicals and contagious disease.

Occasional stooping, kneeling, crouching, pulling and minimum lifting of 30 pounds is required. Continuous standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, repetitive motions. Salary: $21.83-$27.77, based on experience and qualifications.
