About the Role:

The Phlebotomist plays a critical role in the healthcare system by accurately and safely collecting blood specimens from patients for diagnostic testing, transfusions, research, or blood donations. This position requires meticulous attention to detail to ensure proper identification, labeling, and handling of specimens to maintain sample integrity and patient safety. The Phlebotomist must establish a calm and reassuring environment for patients of all ages and backgrounds, effectively managing any anxiety or discomfort associated with blood draws. Additionally, the role involves maintaining compliance with all health and safety regulations, including infection control protocols and proper disposal of biohazard materials. Ultimately, the Phlebotomist contributes to timely and accurate laboratory results that are essential for patient diagnosis and treatment planning.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of an accredited phlebotomy training program.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in venipuncture and blood collection techniques.
  • Knowledge of specimen handling, labeling, and processing standards.
  • Current Texas Texas driver's license and proof of liability insurance.
  • Familiarity with electronic health record (EHR) systems for specimen documentation.
  • Driver's license and automobile liability insurance
  • Strong interpersonal skills with experience in patient care or customer service.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience working in a clinical or hospital laboratory setting.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) or CPR certification.

Responsibilities:

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary puncture to collect blood specimens from patients following established protocols.
  • Verify patient identity and ensure proper labeling and documentation of all specimens collected.
  • Prepare and process specimens for laboratory analysis, including plasma processing techniques when required.
  • Maintain and calibrate phlebotomy equipment and supplies to ensure safety and functionality.
  • Monitor and record vital signs as needed during specimen collection to ensure patient safety.
  • Adhere to infection control and safety procedures, including proper disposal of sharps and biohazard materials.
  • Communicate effectively with patients to explain procedures and alleviate concerns.
  • Maintain patient confidentiality at all times.
  • Collect specimens from PPGH Clinic
  • Collaborate with healthcare team members to coordinate specimen collection schedules and resolve any issues.

Skills:

The required skills such as drawing blood, venipuncture, and specimen collection are fundamental to the daily responsibilities of a Phlebotomist, ensuring accurate and safe blood draws. Proficiency in blood drawing and specimen processing techniques allows the Phlebotomist to prepare samples correctly for laboratory analysis, maintaining sample integrity. Knowledge of plasma processing techniques enhances the ability to handle specialized specimens when necessary. The ability to monitor vital signs supports patient safety during procedures, especially for those with health concerns. Preferred skills like familiarity with electronic health records and strong communication abilities improve workflow efficiency and patient experience, enabling the Phlebotomist to work effectively within a multidisciplinary healthcare team.


Day Shift: 0500 AM-13:30PM.
This position is an hourly position budgeted for 40 hours per week. Eligible for overtime pay and shift differential, when applicable.
