Summary of Essential Functions

Serves as a patient care team member with an emphasis on drawing blood aseptically from patients in the hospital and employees as needed.

Performs specimen collection for employee drug and COVID-19 screening.

Performs routine laboratory tasks related to receiving and processing specimens of any type including but not limited to whole blood, blood components, body fluids, lower respiratory samples, wounds, and tissues.

Performs clerical processes including but not limited to order entry, report processing, and computer data entry.
Educational Requirements
-
High School Diploma or equivalent.

Must be able to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing.
License and Certifications
-
Phlebotomy certification preferred.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities
-
Phlebotomy experience and preferred.

Must be able to communicate with other persons effectively and courteously.

Understand and comprehend basic medical terminology to transcribe physician orders.

Must be able to prioritize work according to written instructions using organizational skills and sound judgment.
Physical Requirements

Bending, walking, standing, and moderate lifting up to 35 pounds.

Manual dexterity, visual acuity, and color vision.

Must be able to handle all types of biological and physical specimens using proper blood and body fluid precautions.
Duties and Responsibilities
-
Provides a communication link between laboratory staff, patient care providers and outreach clients to facilitate the provision of prompt, accurate, efficient laboratory services.

Prepares patients and aseptically collects specimens utilizing written procedures and with an approach that considers patient age and level of anxiety.

Ensures proper patient identification and accurate specimen labeling according to established procedures.
-
Maintains patient identity through all phases of specimen processing.
-
Ensures collection of proper specimens according to established procedures.
-
Frequently requests and reviews collection pending reports during each shift and resolves all outstanding problems.

Proper collection and handling of specimens for urine drug and COVID-19 screening on hospital employees using appropriate chain of custody guidelines when indicated.

Handles contaminated specimens and material according to infection control guidelines and reports accidents or incidents appropriately.

Assists with stock level maintenance in the processing area.
-
Dates and distributes laboratory supplies upon arrival.
-
Handling requests for lab tests to include transcription of physician’s orders promptly and accurately according to procedure.

Reviews medication, previous surgeries and other pertinent information that could influence the requested laboratory tests.
-
Registers patients and orders testing efficiently and accurately for both hospital and reference laboratory patients as needed.

Performs all other tasks/responsibilities as assigned.
