Phlebotomist/Medical Courier PRN

Position Summary

We are seeking a dependable, detail-oriented PRN Phlebotomist / Medical Courier to support specimen collection and transport services throughout the Moberly and Columbia, Missouri region. This role requires flexibility and professionalism while performing venipuncture and capillary collections in both clinic settings and Long-Term Care (LTC) facilities, along with secure and compliant transport of laboratory specimens.

The ideal candidate demonstrates strong patient interaction skills, understands laboratory compliance requirements, and maintains strict adherence to safety and HIPAA standards.

Key Responsibilities

Phlebotomy & Specimen Collection

  • Perform venipuncture and capillary blood collections on adult and geriatric patients
  • Conduct draws in physician clinics and LTC facilities (skilled nursing, assisted living)
  • Collect additional specimens as required (urine, swabs, etc.)
  • Properly label, process, centrifuge (if required), and package specimens
  • Verify patient identity using approved identifiers
  • Ensure accurate completion of requisitions and electronic documentation
  • Follow infection control and OSHA bloodborne pathogen standards
  • Maintain positive bedside manner, especially with elderly and medically fragile patients

Medical Courier Duties

  • Safely transport specimens between clinics, LTC facilities, and laboratory locations
  • Maintain chain of custody and temperature integrity during transport
  • Utilize proper biohazard packaging in compliance with DOT and OSHA guidelines
  • Maintain vehicle cleanliness and readiness
  • Track and document pickups and deliveries accurately
  • Communicate delays or specimen issues promptly to laboratory leadership

Compliance & Quality

  • Adhere to HIPAA privacy and security regulations at all times
  • Follow CLIA and laboratory quality control procedures
  • Maintain accurate logs and documentation
  • Report specimen integrity concerns immediately
  • Participate in training and competency assessments as required

Work Environment

  • Clinic environments (outpatient physician offices)
  • Long-Term Care facilities (nursing homes, rehabilitation centers)
  • Travel between sites required
  • Variable hours based on patient census and provider needs

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Phlebotomy certification (preferred but not required if experienced)
  • Minimum 1 year of phlebotomy experience preferred
  • Experience drawing geriatric patients strongly preferred
  • Valid Missouri driver’s license
  • Reliable vehicle with current insurance
  • Clean driving record
  • Ability to pass background check and drug screening

Preferred:

  • Experience in LTC facility phlebotomy
  • Knowledge of specimen processing and centrifugation
  • Familiarity with electronic requisition systems
  • DOT and OSHA familiarity related to specimen transport

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods
  • Frequent bending, reaching, and lifting (up to 30 lbs)
  • Ability to enter and exit facilities and vehicle multiple times per shift

Schedule

  • PRN / As Needed
  • Weekday and occasional weekend availability preferred
  • Early morning availability a plus

Compensation

  • Competitive hourly rate (based on experience)
  • Mileage reimbursement (if applicable)
  • Flexible scheduling

Pay: $18.00 - $24.00 per hour
