The Physical Therapist Assistant at MD Anderson Cancer Center provides skilled technical assistance to the Licensed Physical Therapist and supports patients in regaining mobility and improving quality of life. Cancer and its treatments can sometimes have lasting effects on physical function, and rehabilitation plays a vital role in recovery.

The ideal candidate must have an Associate's Degree from a Physical Therapist Assistant Program accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association, at least one year of experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant in an acute care setting (preferably oncology), and hold a Physical Therapist Assistant License issued by the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners. The candidate must also maintain CPR certification. The candidate must also be available to work a 32-hour work week, four 8-hour shifts, Monday - Friday.

The Department of Rehabilitation Services has more than 100 oncology rehabilitation professionals and staff dedicated to optimizing the physical abilities and quality of life of people affected by cancer. Rehabilitation Services offers physical therapy and occupational therapy for patients of all ages and with any type of cancer who are experiencing problems related to cancer or the side effects of surgery, chemotherapy, or radiation treatment. Rehabilitation services are available to all MD Anderson patients who need help regaining physical function.

Hourly breakdown of salary range:
Minimum $57,500 | Midpoint $72,00 | Maximum $86,500

Essential Job Functions:
  • Perform physical therapy procedures in accordance with written treatment plan formulated by the Licensed Physical Therapist, which may include therapeutic exercises, traction, massage, therapeutic heat and cold, hydrotherapy, ultrasound, electrical stimulation, intermittent compression, functional training, gait training, prosthetic training, chest physical therapy, and measurement for assistive devices
  • Perform tests for interpretation by the Physical Therapist such as goniometry, gross muscle test, length and girth measurements, and vital signs
  • Assist the Physical Therapist with evaluations and complex procedures
  • Schedule patients, document treatment, and submit charges
  • Communicate with Physical Therapist and other members of the health care team on the advice of the therapist responsible for the patient

Education Required: Associate's Degree from a Physical Therapist Assistant Program accredited by the American Physical Therapy Association
Experience Required: None
Experience Preferred: One year experience as a Physical Therapist Assistant in an acute care setting, preferably oncology
Licensure/Certification Required: PTA - Physical Therapist Assistant License issued by the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners or PT - Physical Therapist License issued by the Executive Council of Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy Examiners. CPR - Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation
