Cardiac Surgery PA position working 13-hour days, rotating days/nights in the cardiac surgery ICU and step-down units, working with cardiac surgeons and ICU staff. The BWH Cardiac Surgery Service is a 24/7 PA run service, therefore, working nights, weekends, and holidays is required.

The Physician Assistant (PA) is a licensed provider. This PA specifically works as a PA in cardiac surgery, credentialed with Operative First Assist, and/or acts as a responding clinician for patients with ventricular assist devices. May have additional duties, such as precepting a small number of learners.

Essential Functions
- Provides direct care, counseling, and teaching to patients in the cardiac surgery department.
- Assists surgeons in the operating room, performing technical clinical procedures Performs complete histories and physical examinations.
- Orders, interprets, and evaluates appropriate laboratory and diagnostic tests.
- Develops appropriate plans of care and follow-up based on the outcomes of diagnostic, laboratory, and physical examination findings.
- Orders medications and writes prescriptions according to organizational and regulatory policies and procedures.
- Consistently provides high quality and timely documentation including admission and progress notes, procedure notes, operative notes and discharge summaries.
- Performs bedside procedures as are appropriate to the patient population.

Experience
2+ years of experience as a PA preferred. Will consider outstanding candidates with less than 2 years of experience. For new graduates: cardiac/cardiac surgery and ICU rotation or relevant work experience mandatory.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Thorough knowledge of clinical surgical practices and procedures for cardiothoracic patients.
- Skilled in taking medical histories to assess medical condition and interpret findings.
- Ability to maintain quality control standards.
- Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
- Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
- Ability to communicate clearly and establish/maintain effective working relationships with patients, medical staff and the public.
