- Planning, installation, maintenance, and repair of mechanical piping systems that transport various substances such as high-pressure steam, chemicals, water, and gases
- Review and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications to determine system layouts, material requirements, and the sequence of installation.
- Measure, mark, cut, thread, and bend pipes to the required specifications using a variety of hand and power tools, such as saws, cutting torches, and pipe threaders/benders. They then join pipes and fittings using methods like welding, brazing, soldering, or mechanical joints.
- Install and secure pipes to structures using brackets, clamps, hangers, and welding equipment. This also involves installing related components like valves, gauges, and control systems.
- Conduct pressure and leak tests (e.g., hydrostatic testing) on installed systems to ensure functionality, safety, and compliance with all relevant codes and regulatory standards.
- Perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and repair or replace worn or damaged components like pipes, supports, and valves to ensure efficient and safe operation of existing systems.
- Adhere to all safety guidelines and use appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when working with potentially hazardous materials or in confined and high-risk environments (e.g., working at heights or with dangerous chemicals).
- Work closely with other tradespeople (e.g., welders, engineers, plumbers) and maintain accurate records of work performed, materials used, and project progress.
