Pipefitters (I-III)

Pipefitter I - III

Position Overview

As a Pipefitter (Levels I–III), you'll play a critical role in commercial mechanical service and installation, progressing from entry-level assistance to master-level expertise in wet-side piping systems (hydronic heating, chilled water, steam, boilers, chillers, process piping) for buildings, hospitals, schools, and industrial facilities nationwide. Work on diverse, hands-on projects—from basic support and repairs to leading complex installations, crew oversight, project planning, and system commissioning—collaborating with teams, foremen, and clients to deliver code-compliant, safe, and efficient piping solutions that support sustainable building performance. Our people-first culture invests in your growth at every level with structured training, mentorship, apprenticeships, certifications (e.g., welding, backflow, OSHA), and clear advancement paths, empowering you to build a rewarding career while contributing to reliable infrastructure that keeps communities comfortable and operational.

Duties and Responsibilities Duties vary by level, with increasing independence, complexity, leadership, and responsibility:

  • Level I (Entry-Level): Assist experienced pipefitters with basic layout, cutting, threading, fitting, assembly, and installation of piping systems, supports, and hangers under direct supervision; perform general site support (tool/parts prep, material handling/loading/unloading, cleanup); participate in safety briefings and learn wet-side HVAC basics through on-the-job training.
  • Level II (Mid-Level): Independently handle routine to moderately complex repairs, replacements, and maintenance of piping, supports, valves, and equipment; perform layout, assembly, pressure testing, leak detection, and basic system checks; lead standard calls, document work accurately, and begin mentoring Level I pipefitters by demonstrating techniques and safety practices.
  • Level III (Senior/Journeyman-Level): Lead advanced installations, modifications, and repairs of complex piping systems with minimal supervision; perform troubleshooting, welding/brazing, system balancing, startups, and commissioning; provide daily guidance, coaching, and technical direction to Levels I–II; ensure code compliance and high-quality customer communication.

All levels: Enforce and uphold strict safety protocols (daily hazard assessments, toolbox talks, PPE usage); document work, progress, and incidents accurately; actively pursue personal/professional growth in piping systems, codes, and technologies.

Supervisory Responsibilities Varies by level:

  • Level I & II: None (individual contributor; may offer informal guidance to lower levels).
  • Level III: Provides coaching, mentoring, and technical guidance to Levels I–II; may act as first-level lead on jobsite sections or small crews.

Requirements/Qualifications

  • Experience (varies by level):
    • Level I: 0–3 years in construction, labor, mechanical, or related field; no prior commercial piping experience required—strong mechanical aptitude and eagerness to learn essential.
    • Level II: 3–5 years in piping installation, repair, or construction (commercial/industrial or HVAC/wet-side preferred); demonstrated ability to work independently on routine to moderately complex tasks.
    • Level III: 5+ years with journeyman-level proficiency; proven mastery in diagnosing/resolving advanced issues independently.
  • Education: High school diploma or GED required; trade school, vocational training, apprenticeship, or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications/Licenses: Valid driver's license and clean driving record required; journeyman pipefitter/plumber license (or ability to obtain) preferred for Levels III–IV; welding/brazing certification (e.g., AWS) a plus; backflow or OSHA 30-hour encouraged (company support provided).
  • Physical Demands: Ability to regularly lift/carry up to 50 lbs, climb ladders/scaffolding/stairs, work in confined spaces or at heights, bend/kneel/crouch, reach overhead, and use tools/equipment for extended periods; frequent standing, walking, manual dexterity, and physical stamina required.
  • Work Environment/Safety: Primarily field-based in commercial/industrial settings (indoor/outdoor, mechanical rooms, rooftops, varying weather); exposure to noise, dust, heights, welding hazards, chemicals, and confined-space risks; must adhere to OSHA regulations, conduct hazard identification, and wear required PPE (hard hats, safety glasses, gloves, harnesses, steel-toed boots) at all times—safety is our top priority and non-negotiable. This is a safety-sensitive position. Occasional regional travel within assigned market or on-call rotations may be required.

Required Skills (Progressive by level)

  • Level I: Basic pipefitting/mechanical aptitude, tool familiarity (cutters, threaders, wrenches, levels), safety awareness, ability to follow instructions.
  • Level II: Troubleshooting/repair of routine systems, layout/assembly basics, pressure testing/leak detection, customer communication, documentation.
  • Level III: Advanced fabrication/installation, welding/brazing, system balancing/startup, mentoring, OSHA 30-hour preferred.
