Job Summary

The Planner Scheduler III is a senior-level project controls professionally assigned to large, complex capital projects exceeding $50MM annually, often with multi-year durations. This role requires advanced expertise in project planning, scheduling, and controls, with the ability to independently manage complex schedules, influence project strategy, and provide leadership across major projects. Progression to this level indicates readiness to transition into a full Project Management role.


Education & Experience

  • Post-secondary education in Engineering or a related technical discipline
  • Professional Engineer designation (P.Eng) or equivalent
  • 7–10 years of relevant industry experience, including 2+ years in construction or project execution environments
  • Proven high performer, as demonstrated by prior performance reviews

Certifications

  • Project Management Professional (PMP) certification required

Key Responsibilities & Technical Expertise

Project Planning & Scheduling

  • Assigned to high-value, highly complex projects with significant risk, interdependencies, and stakeholder involvement
  • Serves as an expert user of Primavera P6, responsible for developing, maintaining, analyzing, and optimizing integrated project schedules
  • Applies specialized depth and breadth of expertise in project planning and scheduling, and is recognized as an industry leader in the field
  • Interprets internal and external business challenges and recommends best-practice project controls solutions

Problem Solving & Decision Making

  • Solves complex, non-routine problems using a broad, strategic perspective
  • Identifies innovative solutions that balance cost, schedule, risk, and execution impacts
  • Makes sound, well-reasoned judgments that are reviewed but generally accepted as accurate and feasible
  • Considers full project impact and downstream effects when developing solutions

Leadership & Collaboration

  • Works independently with minimal supervision, requiring guidance only in the most complex situations
  • Leads project controls functions and may lead cross-functional teams or major initiatives
  • Provides clear direction, coaching, and support to Project Execution personnel
  • Demonstrates strong leadership, facilitation, and communication skills
  • Leads project teams and supports alignment across engineering, construction, procurement, and project management

Knowledge Sharing & Mentorship

  • Teaches project controls theory and best practices across functional areas within Major Projects
  • Acts as a mentor and subject matter expert for planners, schedulers, and project controls professionals

Competency Demonstration

  • Recognized as a Project Controls expert across the Major Projects department
  • Able to troubleshoot complex project controls issues and implement effective corrective actions
  • Influences standards, processes, and continuous improvement initiatives within the organization

Supervision & Work Direction

  • Work is assigned in terms of objectives, priorities, and critical interfaces with other units
  • Operates within broad guidelines, with informed guidance available as required
  • Assigns and outlines work, advises on issues, and reviews deliverables for technical accuracy and adequacy

Leadership Authority

  • Provides functional leadership within project controls
  • Reviews and validates technical work products
  • Advises project leadership on schedule strategy, risk, and execution performance
