Primary Function
Performs a variety of skilled, journey-level duties in the design, installation, maintenance and repair of plumbing and related water systems, fixtures and equipment.

Plumber is a full journey-level class in the building trades series. Incumbents are responsible for diagramming, installing, troubleshooting and maintaining a wide variety of plumbing and related systems, fixtures and equipment. Assignments encompass a variety of tasks, seldom require detailed instructions, and require sound judgment and initiative.

Minimum Qualifications
To be eligible for this position, you must meet and provide evidence of the following minimum qualifications:
Experience: Four years of journey-level experience in the plumbing trade.
  • Note: For work experience, a “year” is defined as equivalent to 40 hours per week for 12 months

Education: Equivalent to completion of the twelfth grade.

Duties and Responsibilities
Essential Functions: Essential responsibilities and duties may include, but are not limited to, the following:
1. Designs, installs, maintains and repairs plumbing systems in accordance with applicable building codes.
2. Installs, maintains, repairs and services structural plumbing equipment including pumps, motors, valves, boilers, cooling towers, faucets, toilets, drinking fountains, fire sprinkler systems, water and sewer lines, washing machines and dryers, kitchen appliances and restroom facilities; repairs and replaces plumbing controls on kitchen and boiler equipment.
3. Installs and upgrades fixtures and equipment; repairs and replaces valves; lays out, installs and maintains plumbing systems; installs and tests backflow devices.
4. Repairs water and gas leaks in service lines; replaces polyvinyl chloride (PVC), copper and galvanized pipes; cuts and threads pipes; solders and sweats copper joints/fittings; rebuilds faucets; repairs water supply pipes.
5. Repairs and replaces plumbing fixtures, water heaters, pumps, valves and plumbing control devices, gas lines and meters.
6. Clears drains and obstructions in water and sewer systems; conducts pressure tests of water, gas and compressed air piping and systems; works from blueprints, diagrams, sketches and isometric drawings.
7. Ensures work complies with applicable plumbing and building codes.
8. Maintains a variety of records related to work performed and materials used, including job estimates, blueprints, sketches, diagrams and logs.
9. Operates and maintains a variety of tools and equipment including backhoes, skip loaders, trench diggers, jackhammers, drills, saws, pipe snakes, pipe threading machines, hand and power tools, water chemistry test kits, and testing and calibration equipment.

Marginal Functions:
1. Assists other skilled maintenance personnel in cooperative assignments.
2. Performs related duties and responsibilities as required.

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities
Knowledge of:
1. Specialized tools, materials, practices and methods used in skilled plumbing repair and the installation/maintenance of general plumbing systems.
2. Applicable building, plumbing and hazardous materials codes and ordinances.
3. Operational characteristics of plumbing, water, sewer and gas systems.
4. Backflow protection methods, practices and devices.
5. Health and safety regulations.
6. Technical aspects of the plumbing field.

Skill in:
1. Performing skilled, journey-level plumbing in the maintenance and repair of water systems and fixtures.
2. Diagnosing malfunctions and correcting plumbing deficiencies.
3. Using a variety of tools and equipment specific to the plumbing trade.
4. Operating a variety of light and heavy equipment including jackhammer, hand/power tools, backhoe, skip loader and trench digger.
5. Working cooperatively with others.
6. Understanding and following oral and written directions.
7. Reading and interpreting blueprints, shop drawings, diagrams and specifications.
8. Meeting schedules and time lines.
9. Maintaining routine records.
10. Learning and applying laws, rules and regulations involved in assigned activities.
11. Maintaining sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students, faculty, and staff.
12. Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with all those encountered in the course of work.

Working Conditions
Environmental Conditions: The employee regularly works in outside weather conditions, near moving mechanical parts, and on slippery and uneven surfaces and is frequently exposed to fumes or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is frequently loud.
Physical Conditions: Essential and marginal functions may require physical fitness requirements necessary to perform the job functions with or without accommodation, such as the ability to use hands to repetitively finger, handle, feel or operate objects, tools or controls, to climb and work up to heights of 100 feet, to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl, and to regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally up to 75 pounds. Requires operation of District vehicles.

Terms of Employment
Full-time, 40 hours per week, 12 months per year.
  • This position also carries a probationary period of six months from the date of hire.
