1. Basic Function

Makes complex problem diagnoses and performs repairs and maintenance services, or installs, a variety of mechanical, plumbing, heating, or energy generation equipment. Independently handles complex problems requiring advanced training and extensive experience. Uses sophisticated diagnostic methods and innovative repair techniques. Must posses a journeyman license.

2. Essential Functions

  • Performs a wide variety of duties required to maintain and repair plumbing equipment throughout the University. Install, modify and repair piping and associated components.
  • Carry out work assignments from an interpretation or drawings, sketches, piping layouts manufacturer’s catalogues and associated oral and/or written information and instructions.
  • Plan and layout work to be performed, taking measurements, determine material requirements and making calculations on the job.
  • Draw materials and transport them to and from work and storage areas.
  • Install and maintain proper size and type of piping to provide services under varied temperature and operating conditions which may involve numerous connections and control devices, making cut-ins on mains and lines and lines and establishing off sets.
  • Layout, install, maintain and repair steam, air, water, gas and chilled water lines; plumbing in lavatories, plant and ground and floor drains and sewer lines.
  • Performs the following operations common to the trade: measure, cut, bend thread, hand and cover pipe; make threaded, flanged, welded, leaded or similar joints, dismantle, insulate and replace components; make brackets, opening; flame cut and burn materials.
  • Conducts inspections of systems and equipment.
  • Maintain vehicle maintenance logs and perform minor vehicle repairs.
  • Maintains logs relevant to each system or piece of equipment; preventive maintenance performed and repairs.
  • Makes recommendations for the improvement or repairs to systems and equipment.
  • To assume the accountability to report faulty operations, defective materials and unusual conditions to proper supervision.
  • May install glass, non-metallic or corrosive resistant piping and fixtures under the guidance of more qualified personnel.
  • Recommends spare parts, maintains inventory and obtain parts and equipment through proper procedures
  • Performs such similar, comparable or related duties as may be assigned or required.

3. Qualifications

Knowledge: High school or trade school diploma required. A valid Maryland driver’s license and good driving record are required. Possess a valid plumbing license. Must posses a journeyman license and posses or obtain a Maryland pool operator’s license within one year of hire.

Experience: Minimum five years’ experience at the journeyman level; minimum five years total in the plumbing trade including Residential and Commercial experience. Must be knowledgeable about properly handling environmental items.

Skills/Aptitude: Must have numerical ability, spatial ability, form perception, motor coordination, finger dexterity, manual dexterity, and color discrimination. Quick and positive reaction in emergencies. Good distant vision in one eye and ability to read without strain printed material the size of typewritten characters, with or without accommodation. Ability to hear the conversational voice, with or without accommodation. Ability to speak and be understood under normal circumstances.

Working Conditions: Lifts, carries, pushes or pulls a variety of tools, materials and equipment up to 100 pounds. Climbs, balances, stoops, kneels and crouches in performing work. Works inside and outside; extensive walking throughout campus on a daily basis. Occasional extended work periods. Exposed to wet and cold conditions. Exposed to noise and vibration from operating equipment.
