Position Summary & Responsibilities
Position Summary:
This position provides support to the mission of the Department by providing enforcement activity that protects the citizens of the state. This position investigates, arrests and incarcerates parole absconders, violators in Kansas. The officer conducts criminal and administrative investigations, surveillance, and high risk home visits. This activity supports the parole staff and provides them with information to proactively supervise paroled offenders.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
ARRESTS: Effects the arrest of absconders, compact probation and parole violators, escapees and others for violation of the law. Serves arrest warrants on wanted individuals. Works closely with other law enforcement agencies to provide assistance in the arrest of offenders and other when assistance is appropriate. Participates in raids to seize evidence and/or apprehend suspects. Prepares detailed and accurate reports within established time frames. Keeps the Unit Supervisor informed of activities and reportable incidents. Informs parole staff of arrests and circumstances of arrests.
SURVEILLANCE: Conducts surveillance which includes but is not limited to: verification of compliance with special parole conditions, curfew enforcement, monitoring of associates, STG activities and other activities related to compliance with conditions of supervision. May conduct surveillance in conjunction with criminal or administrative investigations of departmental employees, contract staff and volunteers.
HIGH RISK FIELD CONTACTS: Upon request works closely with parole staff to coordinate home visits and other field contacts in areas of high crime or high risk. Keeps detailed and accurate written records, observation and shares information with appropriate staff. Conducts home and or field contacts with recently released high risk offenders.
INVESTIGATIONS: Conducts investigations of parole violations, parolee activity, criminal and administrative investigations. Establish and maintain an on-going professional relationship with criminal justice agencies and act as a liaison with these agencies for the purpose of sharing information regarding offender activities. Assist when requested by parole staff in the investigation of high-risk parolees. Conducts criminal record checks on parolees.
Conducts interviews with victims, witnesses and suspects to obtain relevant case information in accordance with rules of evidence and applicable warnings of rights. Collects and preserves documents and related evidence relevant to investigative cases maintaining an established chain of custody. Prepares appropriate administrative and investigative reports and forms required by the Kansas Department of Corrections and any other reports necessary for prosecution.
WORK COORDINATION: Coordinates with other special agents, parole staff and law enforcement agencies (local, county, state and federal) along with other community agencies in locating and apprehending parole absconders, violators, escapees and other wanted individuals. Works with or serves on various federal and state crime task forces. Provides assistance to criminal justice agencies when requested as time and circumstances permit. Maintains familiarity with information regarding offenders and inmates and shares the information as appropriate with other criminal justice agencies. Confers with prosecutors for preparation and presentation of evidence in courts of law and other legal proceedings; presents evidence in order to obtain subpoenas, search and arrest warrants. Appear and testify in administrative and legal proceedings. Communicate and share intelligence and other information in a comprehensive manner with other Special Agents in both facility and field operations, Central Office staff, facility staff, parole staff and other law enforcement agencies. Establish and maintain an on-going professional relationship with other criminal justice agencies.
OTHER DUTIES: Conducts other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications:
Four years direct experience in criminal justice, social sciences, or behavioral sciences and one year of experience working with offenders in corrections, parole, or law enforcement.
Preferred Qualifications:
Within one year of employment in the position, the incumbent must successfully complete a training program approved by the Secretary of Corrections. If not already KLETC certified they must attend a KLETC approved law enforcement officer basic academy.
Post-Offer, Pre-employment Requirements: Must possess and maintain a valid driver's license. Must pass a criminal history records check and be eligible for Law Enforcement Certification.
