This is an exciting time to work for Amarillo College! We are seeking our next Police Captain who will be all-in on our mission and who will be responsible for planning, organizing, and directing the day-to-day administration of the Campus Police Department and for supervising the day-to-day activities of assigned officers. This position provides for the safety and welfare of all students, faculty, staff and visitors as well as maintaining peace and order on the properties of Amarillo College.

Qualifications

EDUCATION:
Required: Associate’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field, and Completion of Basic Law Enforcement Academy.

Preferred: Bachelor’s Degree in Criminal Justice or related field.

  • Some College and equivalent experience will substitute for Associate’s Degree.

EXPERIENCE:
Required: Five (5) or more years of supervisor experience in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or related field.

Preferred: Supervisor experience in Law Enforcement, Criminal Justice, or related field within higher education.

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES:
Required: Valid Texas Class C Driver’s License; and, Licensed Texas Peace Officer; and, Advanced Peace Officer License.

Preferred: Master Peace Officer License. ICS/NIMS- 300/400.

Job Duties & Responsibilities

  • Provide direct supervision and leadership to patrol officers and dispatch personnel, including coaching, guidance, and real-time decision support during assigned shifts.
  • Plan, assign, and manage staffing schedules for patrol operations and special events to ensure adequate coverage and operational readiness.
  • Direct and oversee the daily operations of the patrol division, ensuring effective service delivery, adherence to departmental procedures, and alignment with institutional priorities.
  • Supervise department personnel, including performance management, accountability, and enforcement of professional standards and conduct.
  • Lead and support the professional development of officers and dispatchers through training, mentoring, and evaluation processes.
  • Ensure proper maintenance, readiness, and accountability of departmental vehicles, equipment, and assigned resources.
  • Respond to calls for service as needed and provide on-scene leadership, coordination, and backup support for critical incidents.
  • Enforce applicable federal, state, and local laws, as well as college policies, including traffic, parking, and campus regulations.
  • Support and enhance campus safety and security efforts, including building security and emergency response readiness.
  • Assist in the development and delivery of safety training and educational programs for campus stakeholders.Perform other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws, including the Texas Penal Code, Code of Criminal Procedure, and campus regulations
  • Knowledge of law enforcement operations, including patrol, investigations, emergency response, and use-of-force standards
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles, including performance management, employee accountability, and progressive discipline
  • Knowledge of campus public safety requirements, including Clery Act compliance and coordination with Title IX processes
  • Skill in leadership and team supervision, including coaching, mentoring, and directing personnel
  • Skill in critical thinking and sound decision-making in high-pressure and emergency situations
  • Skill in conflict resolution and de-escalation, particularly in sensitive or complex interactions
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication, including report writing and policy interpretation
  • Skill in organizing, prioritizing, and managing multiple operational and administrative responsibilities
  • Ability to exercise sound judgment, discretion, and ethical decision-making
  • Ability to build collaborative relationships with campus stakeholders and external law enforcement partners
  • Ability to respond to and manage critical incidents while coordinating resources in a dynamic environment

Salary: Pay grade 14 Amarillo College Pay Grades (salary is determined by Human Resources based on education, work experience and internal comparisons).

Physical Demands: While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to travel between offices, buildings, campuses and other various locations. Requires the ability to jump, reach above the head, lift and lower, walk up and down stairs quickly, stoop, crouch, kneel, and crawl. Requires the ability to demonstrate use of arms, hands, and legs and occasionally exert physical effort for the purpose of self-defense as required.
May be required to walk or stand for long periods of time and work in various/uncomfortable climatic temperatures. Required to remain awake, alert and visually observant at all times. Required to maintain the ability to lift, push, pull and carry heavy objects as required (i.e. maneuver objects in excess of 200 pounds with assistance of others and/or appropriate equipment.)

Working Conditions: The nature of police work involves a high degree of risk and exposure to various hazards to include criminal offenses, emergency response, traffic stops, and a diversity of calls for service. Must be willing to work a flexible schedule (days, nights, weekends, holidays, and varying events as necessary.) Timely and regular attendance for all employees is required to ensure adequate staffing, positive employee morale, and to meet expected productivity standards throughout the organization. Employees will be held accountable for adhering to their workplace schedules.

Work Environment: This position operates in a professional office environment, and in various campus locations and facilities outside of the office. Requires work with little to no supervision. Environment may include noisy or frequent interruptions and from vehicle locations. Self-sufficiency is critical.
