THE POSITION
Under the direction of the Chief of Police and pursuant to 830.32 of the California Penal Code, provides law enforcement, security and protection to students, personnel, equipment and property of the District; observes and corrects behavior of students and non-students; investigates crimes, accidents, vandalism, and detains persons suspected of criminal behavior; and emphasizes community-based policing and collaborative problem solving.

CURRENT OPENING: Two 12 month/40 hour per week positions. Salary placement will be on Range 38 of the SEIU Salary Schedule "S". Initial salary placement for new employees is customarily at step 1 ($6,528.05 per month) of this salary range.

APPLICANT FILING INFORMATION: This recruitment is open to the public. An eligibility list will be established to fill vacancies for full time, part time, evening, summer, and substitute positions throughout the duration of the eligibility list. Eligibility lists typically last for twelve months. Vacant positions are filled from the top three ranks. Pursuant to PC Rule 6.2.10, the eligibility list established for this recruitment may be used for another related classification at the same or lower salary.

The following must be submitted at the time of application:

  • Certificate of completion of a California POST approved law enforcement training academy.

The following must be submitted by the final test part:

  • Copy of a valid California class "C" driver's license.
  • Proof of valid car insurance.
  • Copy of valid and up-to-date First Aid and CPR Certificate issued by a recognized training program.
  • Proof of highest obtained education.

Possession of valid California POST Basic Certificate from an approved police academy is required at the time of hire. You are not eligible for hire until you have obtained the California POST Basic Certificate. If you currently possess the certificate, please submit the certificate with your application.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  • Communicates with site personnel and administrators regarding special needs, problems and security concerns.
  • Identifies, locates and interviews witnesses.
  • Patrols District grounds, facilities, parking lots and specified off-site locations to enforce District rules and regulations, applicable laws and traffic regulations and responds to intrusion alarm reports at all District sites.
  • Investigates, apprehends and interrogates those suspected of committing or attempting to commit crimes affecting District facilities, personnel, the public or students.
  • Observes, collects, preserves, and records physical and oral evidence of crimes, including fingerprints.
  • Attends and participates in court hearings and trials of suspects.
  • Protects property by making inspections on foot and in patrol vehicle.
  • Provides assistance, information and responds to questions in collaboration with district officials, staff, students, parents, citizens and public safety agencies as appropriate.
  • Emphasizes collaborative problem solving and community interaction in all aspects of the job and in a manner that is free of bias against any individuals or specific groups of people.
  • Prepares written reports to be submitted to prosecuting agencies and/or appropriate district offices for possible suspension or expulsion.
  • Monitors grounds and buildings for signs of unauthorized persons, vandalism, fire, or other potential hazards or crimes that might involve injury to persons, or loss or damage to property.
  • Ensures compliance and knowledge of procedures and techniques of handling firearms.
  • Maintains continuous surveillance of doors, gates, and windows to ensure that District property is maintained in a secure condition.
  • Prepares and reviews incident reports relating to violations in crimes and follow-up investigations.
  • Checks restrooms for loitering, smoking, vandalism and other unauthorized activities.
  • Maintains a variety of records and files.
  • Counsels juvenile offenders and advises parents.
  • Enforces parking regulations on district property.

OTHER RELATED DUTIES

  • Participates in District and campus activities as requested such as, red ribbon week, assemblies, student activity days, career days, events, committees and planning.
  • Provides classroom lessons and training, as requested, on student safety issues, drug, alcohol, tobacco use and abuse and gang violence issues.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Graduation from high school or evidence of equivalent educational proficiency.

Experience: One year of full-time experience as a sworn police officer.

Special:

  • Possession of valid California Basic P.O.S.T. certificate from an approved police academy at the time of hire.
  • Completion of a California P.O.S.T. approved law enforcement training academy.
  • Possession of a valid California class “C” Driver License.
  • Evidence of adequate insurance for a motor vehicle, which meets or exceeds the California legal liability insurance requirement and continue to maintain insurability.
  • Possession of a valid Red Cross First Aid Certificate and Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation Certificate issued by a recognized training program and kept valid during the term of employment.
  • Shall successfully complete a P.O.S.T. approved course of training related to the role of School District Police Officer pursuant to Sections 832.3 (g) and (h) of the California Penal Code within the first twenty-four months of service.
  • Positions within this classification that require driving a District vehicle are subject to participation in the District’s drug testing procedures.
  • Complete related District training.

Condition of Employment:

  • Must be free of any record of conviction for criminal and/or moral offenses, as defined in the Education Code and Penal Code of California.
  • Employee must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential duties of the position without hazard to themselves or others.
  • Must be physically and psychologically evaluated as required by Section 1031, subsection (f) of the California Government Code, and not be disqualified by any factors set forth in sections 1029 and 1031.5.
  • Must pass a background investigation.
  • Must be a U.S. citizen.

Probation: In accordance with the Education Code Section 45301, employees appointed into this class must serve a probationary period of one (1) year to gain status in the permanent classified service.

IDEAL CANDIDATES WILL HAVE:

Knowledge of:

  • California Penal Code, Education Code, and the City and County ordinances relating to theft, burglary, arson, malicious mischief, trespassing, other criminal matters, and law-enforcement activities.
  • Methods, strategies, techniques, procedures, and equipment used in law enforcement, security, safety, and patrol operations.
  • Legal provisions pertaining to arrest, search and seizure, property damage, theft, and trespassing.
  • Sections of the California Welfare and Institutions Code that pertain to Juvenile Court law.
  • Collaborative conflict resolution skills and excellent interpersonal communication skills.
  • Report writing procedures.
  • Police equipment including firearms and communication.
  • Advanced first aid, including CPR methods, procedures and techniques.
  • Rules and regulations pertaining to the protection of buildings and grounds.
  • Disaster preparedness.

Ability to:
