Cary Police Department is recruiting an assistant to help perform complex and sensitive administrative work within the Property and Evidence division. This individual will assist with the collection and coordination of property and evidence within Cary Police. The role will assist with maintaining appropriate chain of custody for all evidence and help coordinate the necessary resources and reporting of this information with the appropriate staff and external parties.

This is a part-time, non-benefited, year-round position, up to 20 hours a week, with a maximum of 999 hours per year and weekday availability will be necessary. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Police Support Services Supervisor.

Typical Tasks

Maintains chain of custody for evidence and other property placed in the custody of the department;

Logs all evidence into the computer; disposes of evidence by court order or state law; destroys property as appropriate; and testifies in court as needed;

Prepares property for online auction;

Prepares HazMat bags for new officers;

Witnesses and documents the destruction of evidence and seized property;

Works on special assignments and projects as needed;

Completes and maintains accreditation files for Evidence and Property;

Performs other job-related tasks as required.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Thorough knowledge of the rules, regulations, and procedures of the Cary Police Department; strong organizational skills with attention to detail; Familiarity with property and handling procedures, chain of custody, and NC legal requirements; Proficiency in Evidence.com, RMS and evidence management software; Strong written and verbal communication skills; Experience handling firearms, controlled substances, or forensic evidence is preferred; Commitment to integrity, confidentiality, and accountability; ability to work independently and manage time effectively; ability to deal tactfully with other employees and the public.

Physical Requirements
Work is generally light. An employee must be able to hear and talk in order to communicate with other employees and the public. Visual acuity is necessary to update files, process reports, read and write handwritten and typewritten materials, operate equipment, and view a computer screen.

Minimum and Preferred Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a two-year community college with an associate's degree in criminal justice or related field and experience working in the law enforcement field in records or other related area.

Conditions of Employment
Requires drug testing and background check (which may include criminal history check, SBI finger-printing, motor vehicle records check, education verification and credit history review) and satisfactory reference checks prior to employment.
