Work Schedule: The Maricopa Community Colleges Police Department operates 24 hours per day, seven (7) days per week, 365 days per year. Schedules may include rotating shift work, nights, weekends, holidays, or otherwise non-standard work schedules. Mandatory overtime may be required.

Job Summary


The Maricopa Community Colleges Police Department is seeking an experienced, professional, highly motivated and well rounded law enforcement leader to serve as an Investigations/Training sergeant in a growing college police department. Laterals and Out-of-State Waiver applicants are strongly encouraged.

The Investigations/Training Sergeant will report directly to the Assistant Chief or designated supervisor and will perform general and specialized detective assignments, manage case loads and conduct follow up on assigned cases. This position will also be responsible for planning, managing and directing all department training, ensuring proper documentation and compliance with AZPOST regulations. This position will enforce state statutory laws and acknowledge compliance with federal guidelines in accordance with the U.S. Department of Education.

This position will provide leadership and supervise public safety operations and activities of sworn and civilian staff and oversee and participate in the enforcement and investigations of laws, ordinances, rules and regulations. As part of the Investigations Unit, this position will be responsible for investigative response and scene management, report approval, issuing of furthers if needed, investigation of crimes, and evidence collection, directives for collection and chain of custody and case submissions to prosecuting agencies. Positive relationships with prosecuting agencies will be a desired qualification for this position. As part of the Training Unit, this position will be responsible for managing continuing and mandatory annual training to remain in compliance with AZPOST standards, overseeing the Field Training Program and all documentation.

Essential Functions


35 % - Plans, organizes, assigns, supervises, reviews and evaluates the investigations of staff; Participates in investigative duties and assignments; reviews reports; coordinates with prosecutors/court staff to submit cases for prosecution. Supervises, oversees and participates in the enforcement of laws, ordinances, rules and regulations.


25% - Investigates criminal activity; arrests, detains or subdues offenders; conducts searches; seizes and Impounds property and evidence


25% - Identifies training needs and opportunities; assists/delivers staff training for department and mentoring to assist in investigations. Coordinates training, scheduling and record keeping associated with AZ POST training and in house training needs.

5 % - Collaborates with and provides guidance to District and college resources based on investigative results of crime trends; Assists or sends out Community Notifications with crime alerts/information


5 %- Evaluates effectiveness of investigations to ensure compliance with federally mandated protocols and standards ;Presents testimony and evidence in court, as required


5% - Other Duties as Assigned

Minimum Qualifications


An associate’s degree or higher from a regionally accredited institution and four (4) years of experience as a sworn police officer or peace officer. Such experience must be gained from employment with a municipality or public entity within the United States, and is only considerable when employed as a solo-capable officer and excludes time spent during initial training, within an academy, or under the direction or oversight of a Field Training Officer.

Additional years of experience, working in the capacity of a sworn police officer, or peace officer, as described above, may be substituted for the required degree; however, there is no substitution allowed for the required experience.

Desired Qualifications


1. Experience supervising a detective squad or investigations unit

2. Ten (10) Years or more of combined law enforcement, investigations and training experience.

3. Experience with report management systems, intelligence gathering & dissemination, evidence & chain of custody integrity and case submittals.

4. Experience in Training others in the LE Field

5. Bachelor's degree or higher or equivalent combination of education and training.

6. Demonstrated Experience in Investigative Principles, Practices and Strategies

7. AZPOST instructor certifications in firearms, physical fitness and/or arrest/defensive tactics.

8 College or University law enforcement experience.

9. One year of relevant full-time MCCCD experience during the previous two years

Special Working Conditions


Licenses, Registrations, or Certifications:


Possession and maintenance of a valid Arizona Peace Officer Standards and Training (AZPOST) certification as a Peace Officer in the State of Arizona, including the satisfaction of all qualifications (age, citizenship, background, psychological, ethical, medical, or otherwise) required for such certification, at the date of or subsequent to the date of hire. A valid certification is to indicate that the individual is authorized to engage in enforcement duties, carry a firearm, wear or display a badge, make arrests, perform patrol functions, and operate a marked police vehicle. Certifications that are restricted are not considered valid for the purpose of initial hire.

  • Possession and maintenance of a valid State of Arizona Driver License (Class D) with an initial and ongoing driving record to the satisfaction of MCCCD.
  • Current CPR/First Aid certification is required for the duration of employment within this classification.


Background Check:
Because of the confidential and sensitive nature of information handled, successful completion of a comprehensive background investigation, which may include, but is not limited to, polygraph testing, fingerprinting, and a psychological examination to the initial and ongoing satisfaction of MCCCD is required.


Firearms:
Positions within this classification have frequent exposure to firearms and are regularly required to carry a firearm. Incumbents must successfully complete initial and ongoing firearms qualification in compliance with AZPOST requirements. Such qualification will occur on an annual basis or on another schedule, in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, or regulations, as determined by MCCCD. Incumbents must maintain the legal ability to carry and utilize firearms in the course of their duties at all times during employment within this classification.


Substance Abuse Testing:
Due to the nature of police work, positions within this classification shall be subject to pre-employment, ongoing/random, and/or incident-based alcohol, drug, and/or controlled substance testing in compliance with any applicable laws, rules, and regulations.

Positions in this class typically require: reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

    Working Conditions: Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor environments. Work frequently includes exposure to a variety of weather conditions, for short or long durations, including rain, wind, dust, cold temperatures and extreme desert heat. Work may include moderate exposure to hazardous materials (such as chemicals, fumes, fuels, odors, poor ventilation, gasses, particulates, blood or other body fluids). Work may include frequent exposure to adverse environmental conditions (such as uneven ground, slippery surfaces, vehicular traffic, loud noises, disruptive or uncooperative individuals, imminent dangers or threats, sick, injured, victimized, and/or deceased individuals, persons with concealed and unconcealed weapons, and/or individuals under the influence of alcohol, illicit drugs, or other substances). May respond to, work in, or be exposed to emergency conditions, or environments where limited or no information regarding dangers or hazards is known. Conditions or situations may be encountered where there is the possibility of danger to life, health, or bodily injury to self and others.

    Travel: Travel to various locations within or adjacent to the District is required to perform the essential functions of this classification.
