NC A&T State University is a public, comprehensive, land-grant university committed to fulfilling its fundamental purposes through exemplary undergraduate and graduate instruction, scholarly and creative research, and effective public service. The university offers degree programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral levels with emphasis on engineering, agriculture, biological science, technology, literature and other academic areas. Basic and applied research is conducted by faculty university centers of excellence, in institutional relationships, and through significant involvement with several public and private agencies. The university also conducts major research through biology, health science, engineering, as well as extension programs in agriculture.
North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University’s College of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences (CAES) has a rich history of innovation and application of cutting-edge technology. From our pioneering Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture programs to our award-winning Cooperative Extension and Agricultural Research programs, our faculty and staff serve today’s needs while keeping an eye on the future. Nationally, CAES produces the largest number of African American graduates in agriculture and second in Animal Sciences.
CAES offers 9 BS degrees, 3 MS degrees and 1 PhD and educates over 1100 students. BS degrees include: Agricultural and Environmental Systems, Agricultural Education, Animal Science, Biological Engineering, Child Development and Family Studies, Family and Consumer Sciences, Food and Nutritional Sciences, Laboratory Animal Science and Landscape Architecture. The graduate programs include MS in Agricultural Education, MS in Agricultural and Environmental Systems and MS in Food and Nutritional Sciences, and the new interdisciplinary PhD in Agriculture and Environmental Sciences with 5 concentrations, including an animal science specialization track
The Department of Animal Sciences is housed in a 64,000 square foot, 2 story facility. It accommodates modern instructional classrooms, teaching laboratories and faculty research laboratories. The first floor includes a 12,000 square foot environmentally controlled laboratory animal resource unit. Bachelor of Science Degrees are offered in Animal Science, Animal Science (Animal Industry concentration), and Laboratory Animal Science, in addition to The Master of Science Degree in Agricultural and Environmental Systems with a concentration in Integrated Animal Health Systems. The department is supported by beef, poultry, swine, dairy, small ruminants, equine teaching and research facilities. These extended laboratory opportunities, located as part of the University’s fam complex, help to further enhance research capabilities and practical demonstrations for agricultural activities. The department consists of 12 faculty members; 410 undergraduate students and 12 graduate students. The Department of Animal Sciences produces the second highest number of African Americans that go on to pursue the D.V.M in the United States. The department also has one of the highest student first-year retention rates on campus, displaying the importance placed upon student success.
