Job Summary

A Postdoctoral Researcher position is available in the Smalyukh Research Group, Department of Physics, MSE and RASEI, University of Colorado Boulder. This is an opening with a research focus on topological aspects of physical behavior in soft and magnetic materials with emergent new properties, including the development of fundamental foundations meta matter and metamaterials building on interdisciplinary fusion of chirality and topology concepts.

The position is initially for one year starting from December 1, 2025 or later, but can be potentially extended for about three additional years. In addition, our Research laboratory can host Feodor Lynen Research Fellows in this research area and encourages applications by scientists interested in a collaborative research while staying in our laboratory.
CU is an Equal Opportunity Employer and complies with all applicable federal, state, and local laws governing nondiscrimination in employment. We are committed to creating a workplace where all individuals are treated with respect and dignity, and we encourage individuals from all backgrounds to apply, including protected veterans and individuals with disabilities.

Who We Are

The research conducted by the faculty, staff, and students in the CU Physics Department is vibrant and groundbreaking across the broad scope of most subfields in physics.

The discovery of the Higgs boson was made at the CERN supercollider, in a collaboration involving our high energy physics faculty. Nobel-prize caliber research is carried out in studies of quantum gases and quantum optics. Condensed-matter theorists and experimentalists unravel the mysteries of many-body systems, including liquid crystals and the quantum mechanical nature of the electrical and magnetic behavior of materials.

What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be

The planned research projects will be spanning soft condensed matter and magnetic solid-state systems, including studies of colloids, liquid crystals, chiral magnets, topological defects and solitons, and out-of-equilibrium behavior of topologically protected field configurations in condensed matter systems.

What We Can Offer

The annual salary for this position is $51,045.

Benefits

At the University of Colorado Boulder, we are committed to supporting the holistic health and well-being of our employees. Our comprehensive benefits package includes medical, dental, and retirement plans; generous paid time off; tuition assistance for you and your dependents; and an ECO Pass for local transit. As one of Boulder County’s largest employers, CU Boulder offers an inspiring academic community and access to world-class outdoor recreation. Explore additional perks and programs through the CU Advantage program.

Be Statements

Be creative. Be impactful. Be Boulder.

What We Require

PhD completion.

What We Would Like You to Have

Prior research experiences in one or more of the following research directions will be considered valuable: (1) Liquid crystals; (2) Colloids; (3) Nanoparticle synthesis and surface functionalization; (4) active matter systems; (5) molecular and colloidal self-assembly; (6) magnetic materials; (7) skyrmions and knotted fields. Multiple collaborations with other postdocs and PhD students in the group as well as within the network of the International Institute for Sustainability with Knotted chiral meta matter (WPI-SKCM2) are expected. The research can involve both experiments and numerical modeling, and preferably a combination of both.
