Posting Summary
Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Postdoctoral Associate for the Child Health Institute of NJ at the Robert Wood Johnson Medical School.

Under the direction of Principal Investigator, the Postdoc(s) will be responsible for the design, analysis, interpretation and presentation of experiments regarding the study of molecular mechanisms of the regulation of synaptic transmission in mammalian brain and human neurons derived from human tissue. In addition, the postdoc(s) should have a strong background in neuroscience and/or cell biology and be able to perform molecular, cellular and/or electro-physiological experiments.

The postdoc(s) will participate in lab meetings, research in progress seminars, and presentations at conferences. They will prepare manuscripts based on their research, aid in developing the PI’s grant applications, and will be expected to apply for personal grant funding.

As part of their career development to transition to the next phase of their career, the applicant(s) will be trained in improving their experimental design skills and their oral and written presentation skills. Multiple resources for career development to aid with these requirements will be provided by the PI and the Office of Postdoctoral Affairs.

Among the key duties of this position are the following:
  • Design, perform and analyze molecular biology, cell biology, and in vivo behavioral experiments.
  • Generation of lentiviral vector for in vivo or in vitro gene delivery; primary neuronal culture; human fibroblast and pluripotent stem cell culture.
  • Compile and analyze data with appropriate conclusions and recommendations in support of further CHI research.
  • Communicate with the PI and present the data in a timely manner.
  • Keep up to date on the relevant literature in both peer-reviewed and preprint form and assist the PI in preparation of manuscripts and grant applications relevant to own experimental work.
  • Assist with the instruction and training of students (undergraduate and graduate) in laboratory techniques and procedures in the area of cellular and molecular analysis to carry out research assignments.

Qualifications

Minimum Education and Experience
  • Qualified candidate(s) must hold a PhD or MD degree in Neuroscience or relevant biological sciences.
  • Prior experience with cell culture, biochemistry, and cell imaging techniques are required.

Certifications/Licenses

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Must be able to work with rodent animals and human embryonic cells.
  • Must have effective oral and written communication skills; and ability to understand and communicate in English to sufficiently perform the job duties.
  • Must be computer literate with proficiency and working knowledge of database and reporting tools such as Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Must have a high level of research competency, knowledge, and skills to perform duties assigned by the PI.
  • Must be able to assist in daily lab management, including training and direct oversight of personnel and students.
  • Must have at least one first-author publication in peer-reviewed journals in biology-relevant fields.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Applicant should be highly motivated, have excellent organizational skills, and be able to work collaboratively and independently under the guidance of the PI.
  • Excellent writing skills with experience in writing grants, fellowships, manuscripts, or scientific reports strongly preferred.
