Postdoctoral Researcher

King Abdullah Petroleum Studies and Research Center (KAPSARC) is an advisory think tank within global energy economics and sustainability that serves entities and authorities in the Saudi energy sector. The Postdoctoral Program offers an exceptional opportunity to engage in cutting edge research and foster interdisciplinary collaboration in energy economics, policy, and technology.

Program Areas and Responsibilities
  • Utilities & Renewables: support research in power sector modelling (PLEXOS, GAMS, or other major software or programming languages), regulatory topics such as cost recovery, capacity payments, tariff design, and market design and structure, and emerging technologies including batteries, carbon capture and storage, hydrogen, and digitalisation.
  • Energy Macro & Microeconomics: conduct research on CGE and DSGE modelling to understand how economic conditions and policy changes in the energy sector impact macro economic variables and the overall economic structure of energy exporting countries, with a particular focus on Saudi Arabia.
  • Oil & Gas: specialise in oil markets with an emphasis on supply and demand, monitor and analyse upstream developments, and apply economic and modelling techniques throughout the supply chain from production to refining and consumer behaviour.
  • Climate & Sustainability: research climate change policy and regulation, economic aspects of climate change, and carbon market tools and mechanisms.
  • Transport & Urban Infrastructure: conduct empirical research and policy analysis on governance models of urban infrastructure development or housing and shelter sufficiency, producing clear, concise, reader friendly evidence based policy papers, working papers, reports, and other publications.
Qualifications and Experience

Recent completion or imminent completion of a Ph.D. in Energy Economics, Public Policy, Sustainability, Environmental Science, Engineering, or a related field. Strong knowledge in one or more of KAPSARC's research areas-including energy policy, oil and gas markets, economics, renewables, transportation, climate, and sustainability. Demonstrated expertise in independent research, quantitative and qualitative methods, and relevant software tools and datasets. Excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills for effective collaboration within a multidisciplinary team.
