Preschool/Pre-K Teacher Assistant

Mercymount Country Day School (Mercymount), an institution known for its tradition of educational excellence, is seeking a strategic, mission-oriented, and collaborative professional to join our school community as a fourth-grade teacher. The teacher is accountable to the assistant head of school and the head of school and is expected to provide education to the grades and/or subjects assigned, implement the school mission and philosophy, follow the policies outlined in the school handbooks of Mercymount Country Day School, and adhere to the directives put forth by the school administration.

Job Summary: The Preschool/Prekindergarten Assistant Teacher will be an ambassador and advocate for Mercymount promoting the mission and engaging positive relationships with students, families, faculty, and staff. This individual will establish a faith-filled and nurturing environment in which “each child is recognized as a unique gift of a loving God.” S/He will demonstrate knowledge of content, facilitate learning for all students following the Hartford standards and prescribed curriculum, and model Gospel values.

Key Responsibilities

  • Support the lead teacher in implementing developmentally appropriate lessons and lead small group activities focused on early math and literacy skills.
  • Provide individualized and small group support to reinforce learning objectives and address students’ academic, social, and emotional needs.
  • Supervise three- and four-year-old students throughout the school day, ensuring a safe and structured classroom environment.
  • Accompany students to special classes such as Spanish, Music, Library, and Physical Education, encouraging participation and positive behavior.
  • Apply positive classroom management strategies to promote cooperation, self-regulation, and respect.
  • Assist with classroom organization, lesson preparation, and maintaining an orderly learning environment.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education, Elementary Education or a closely related field, or in process preferred
  • Early Education and Care (EEC) certified or in process preferred
  • Must be able to relate well to children
  • Must possess initiative, collaboration and excellent communication skills
  • At least 1 year of relevant experience
