Prescribed Fire Coordinator

Job Responsibilities

• Serves as the SCFC lead to increase the use of prescribed fire to mitigate wildfire risk and to coordinate the effective use of partner organizations to accomplish prescribed burning. Coordinates with SCFC personnel to efficiently allocate resources for agency prescribed burning to reduce wildfire risk.
• Helps organize and conduct training for landowners such as "Learn to Burn" workshops with the goal of enabling them to conduct prescribed burning on their property to reduce wildfire risk. Helps CPFM graduates locate opportunities for mentoring and completion of their certification. Works with agency staff and partners to encourage the development and sustaining of prescribed burn associations and to identify and prioritize areas where prescribed fire can most effectively be used to reduce wildfire risk to communities, citizens and first responders.
• Helps assess the need for prescribed burning training for SCFC personnel and takes steps to address this need.
• Promotes prescribed burning as a resource management and wildfire reduction tool. Assists with conducting prescribed burns and with wildfires as needed to augment wildland fire capacity.
• Participates in activities and/or projects in support of agency’s mission and performs other duties as required.

Minimum and Additional Requirements

• A bachelor's degree (natural resources field preferred) and 3 years of relevant program experience or equivalency as approved by Human Resources is required.
• Must pass initial physical fitness test that requires a two-mile walk carrying a 25-pound pack in 30 minutes or meet the agency physical fitness program requirements.
  
• Must obtain firefighter registration with the SC State Fire Marshall's office.
• Criminal background check required. Drug and alcohol test required.
• Must possess a valid Driver's License (Class D).

• Within 1 year must become NWCG Certified Firefighter 2. Within 1 year must complete the following training courses: NWCG Wildland Firefighter Training (S-130), Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior (S-190), Firefighter Type 1 Training (S-131), Introduction to the Incident Command System (ICS-100), National Incident Management System, An Introduction (IS-700), Basic Command System for Incident Response (ICS-200), Intermediate Incident Command System for Expanding Incidents (ICS-300), Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service (L-180), and Annual Fireline Safety Refresher (RT-130).
• Within 3 years must complete the following training courses: Portable Pumps and Water Use (S-211), Intermediate Wildland Fire Behavior (S-290), and Initial Attack Incident Commander (S-200).

Additional Comments

• This position is PORS eligible.
• Ability to work both indoors and outdoors in changing environmental conditions.
• Must be able to lift, walk, squat, climb and carry objects up to 50 lbs.
• Generally works a Monday-Friday, 8:30 AM-5:00 PM schedule with occasional overnight travel. Overnight travel required to include extensive periods of time (up to 18 days) on large fire incidents and all-hazard incidents in/out of the state.
• Considerable knowledge and practical experience with prescribed fire as it relates to timber and wildlife management and mitigation of wildfire risk in the Southeastern U.S.
• Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally with landowners, partners, and fellow employees.
• Knowledge of conservation and wildlife programs provided by federal (i.e., Farm Bill, US Fish and Wildlife Service), state, & local entities is preferred.
• Position requires the employee to be subject to random, post incident/accident, reasonable suspicion and rehabilitation monitoring and drug and alcohol testing consistent with SCFC Drug-Free Workplace Policy and Procedure.
