Principal Banking Solution Architect

We are seeking a highly experienced Principal Banking Solution Architect to lead the architecture and technical design of a modern digital banking and financial technology platform.

The successful candidate will define the target architecture across personal banking, business banking, accounts, wallets, payments, cards, remittance, foreign exchange, treasury, ledger, reconciliation, compliance, data, and external financial-service integrations.

This is a senior technical leadership role requiring deep knowledge of banking systems, financial transaction processing, distributed architectures, security, regulatory controls, and cloud-native engineering.

You will work closely with senior management, product leaders, engineering teams, compliance specialists, finance teams, vendors, banking partners, and delivery managers to ensure that the platform is secure, scalable, resilient, financially accurate, and suitable for regulated operation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define and maintain the end-to-end architecture for the digital banking platform.
  • Establish the target architecture, domain boundaries, integration patterns, data flows, and technology standards.
  • Lead architecture across personal banking, business banking, payments, wallets, cards, treasury, compliance, accounting, and reporting.
  • Translate business strategy, regulatory requirements, and product roadmaps into scalable technical solutions.
  • Create solution architecture documents, system context diagrams, component diagrams, sequence diagrams, data-flow diagrams, and deployment architectures.
  • Define bounded contexts and service ownership using domain-driven design principles.
  • Design cloud-native, event-driven, API-first, and microservice-based solutions.
  • Ensure clear separation between customer-facing applications, banking services, ledger systems, financial-crime controls, and operational platforms.
  • Review and approve technical designs for new modules, services, integrations, and major platform changes.
  • Establish architecture governance, technical design authority, and architecture-review processes.
  • Define reusable patterns for APIs, events, workflows, security, data access, observability, and error handling.
  • Ensure financial transactions are processed accurately, atomically, idempotently, and with complete auditability.
  • Define architectural controls for duplicate prevention, retries, reversals, refunds, corrections, and transaction recovery.
  • Design integration architecture for banks, payment schemes, card processors, KYC providers, AML vendors, FX providers, payout networks, and other third parties.
  • Define standards for REST APIs, webhooks, file exchange, event streaming, and financial messaging.
  • Lead the design of ISO 20022-based payment and reporting integrations.
  • Ensure the architecture supports multi-currency accounts, safeguarding, settlement, reconciliation, and financial reporting.
  • Design secure identity, authentication, authorisation, consent, and privileged-access models.
  • Define encryption, key management, certificate management, secrets management, and data-protection requirements.
  • Ensure that regulatory, security, operational-resilience, and audit requirements are built into the architecture.
  • Define non-functional requirements for availability, scalability, recoverability, latency, throughput, security, and data retention.
  • Guide cloud, Kubernetes, Kafka, database, API gateway, observability, and infrastructure decisions.
  • Support build-versus-buy evaluations and technical vendor selection.
  • Assess third-party platforms, banking providers, and technology vendors.
  • Identify architectural risks, technical debt, dependencies, and remediation priorities.
  • Support production-readiness assessments, disaster-recovery planning, and resilience testing.
  • Mentor solution architects, technical leads, senior engineers, and engineering managers.
  • Communicate architecture decisions clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Experience

  • Extensive experience in banking, FinTech, payments, financial services, or financial-software architecture.
  • Proven experience as a Principal Architect, Enterprise Architect, Solution Architect, Banking Architect, or similar senior technical leader.
  • Experience designing large-scale banking, payment, ledger, wallet, card, or financial-processing platforms.
  • Deep understanding of financial transaction lifecycles.
  • Strong knowledge of account balances, postings, settlement, reconciliation, safeguarding, and financial accounting.
  • Experience designing distributed, high-availability, and fault-tolerant systems.
  • Strong understanding of domain-driven design, bounded contexts, and service decomposition.
  • Experience with microservices, event-driven architecture, APIs, and cloud-native platforms.
  • Strong knowledge of Java or Kotlin and Spring Boot environments.
  • Experience with Kafka or another event-streaming platform.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases, transactional consistency, and data integrity.
  • Strong understanding of security architecture, identity, access management, encryption, and key management.
  • Experience defining non-functional requirements and architecture principles.
  • Strong experience producing architecture documentation and technical design standards.
  • Ability to lead architecture reviews and challenge unsuitable technical decisions.
  • Excellent stakeholder-management, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to explain complex architectural decisions to business, compliance, and executive stakeholder
  • Experience designing secure APIs and partner integrations.
  • Understanding of synchronous and asynchronous communication patterns.
  • Experience with idempotency, distributed transactions, saga patterns, outbox patterns, retries, and duplicate prevention.
  • Strong understanding of security architecture, identity, access management, encryption, and key management.
  • Experience defining non-functional requirements and architecture principles.
  • Strong experience producing architecture documentation and technical design standards.

Candidates should highlight experience in:

  • Core banking or FinTech architecture
  • Payments and financial transaction processing
  • Ledger and accounting systems
  • Microservices and event-driven architecture
  • Banking integrations and ISO 20022
