Principal Coastal/Ocean Modeling Lead (Hydrodynamics)

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates

Lead the technical work for a nuclear-adjacent coastal study: build and calibrate a high-resolution hydrodynamic model, run jellyfish/biota transport scenarios with and without marine barriers, perform oil-spill trajectory simulations and recommend barrier/deflection strategies. Own method statements, schedule, delivery quality, and client technical interface.

Key Responsibilities

  • Select, configure, and calibrate 2D/3D hydrodynamic models (e.g., Delft3D, MIKE 21/3, ROMS, TELEMAC, ADCIRC) including tides, waves, winds, and density effects.
  • Implement Lagrangian/particle tracking for jellyfish/biota transport; test barrier effectiveness and alternative layouts.
  • Set up oil-spill fate & transport scenarios (e.g., OpenDrift/NOAA GNOME or equivalent) and propose deflection/containment plans.
  • Define data needs; ingest and QC bathymetry, met-ocean, ADCP, satellite/reanalysis datasets; manage model skill assessment.
  • Produce technical reports, figures, GIS layers, and executive summaries; present findings to client/authorities.
  • Lead the technical method statement, WBS, risk register, and schedule for the tender and post-award execution.
  • Coordinate with procurement, HSE/QA, and document control; ensure traceability and version control across deliverables.

Qualifications

  • MSc/PhD in Coastal/Ocean Engineering, Physical Oceanography, or related field.
  • 5+ years (7+ preferred) hands-on experience in coastal hydrodynamic modeling and particle/oil-spill simulations.
  • Demonstrated model calibration/validation expertise; skill metrics and uncertainty analysis.
  • Proficiency with one or more stacks: Delft3D / MIKE 21/3 / ROMS / TELEMAC / ADCIRC, SWAN/WAVEWATCH III, OpenDrift/GNOME.
  • Strong scripting & data skills: Python/Matlab, GIS (ArcGIS/QGIS), NetCDF/OPeNDAP, ERDDAP.
  • Experience preparing method statements, BOQs/LoE estimates, schedules, and client presentations.
  • Gulf/Arabian Sea regional experience and familiarity with regulated or nuclear-adjacent sites are pluses.
  • Excellent written and verbal English; stakeholder-facing communication.

Nice to Have

  • Knowledge of QA systems (ISO 9001; exposure to ISO 19443/NQA-1 desirable).
  • Familiarity with Aconex/EDMS, data books, and MDR compilation.
  • Awareness of site access, security badging, and HSE requirements for critical facilities.
