Description
The Principal Controls Engineer (Robotics) will serve as a technical leader and domain expert, responsible for defining and advancing the control system architecture for our medical robotic platform. This individual will translate customer and clinical requirements into system-level design requirements and guide the development of advanced motion control, sensing, and software systems. She/he will architect robust control strategies to achieve challenging performance targets while ensuring scalability, reliability, and patient safety. As a senior member of the team, the Principal Engineer will influence technical direction, mentor engineers across disciplines, and provide cross-functional leadership to ensure alignment between product vision, regulatory compliance, and engineering execution. This is a full time on-site position and will require reporting to our offices located in Campbell, CA.
Responsibilities, Skills & Hands-On Experience
  • Translate customer requirements into engineering performance requirements for mechanical, sensors, electrical, control and software subsystems.
  • Analyze and model key performance metrics for system including risk assessment.
  • Develop control strategies and algorithms to enable the system to meet performance requirements.
  • Develop and implement safety control strategies and algorithms, including documentation of risks, mitigations, and testing protocols.
  • Develop and manage production level software implementation of control, safety, and fault detection algorithms.
  • Provide top-level analysis to support decision making involving trade-offs between functionality in different subsystems or engineering specialties.
  • Provide analytical support to other engineering design teams, including documentation required to support analysis and design decisions required for regulatory agencies.
Education & Work Experience
  • PhD preferred (M.S. with exceptional track record considered) in Mechanical Engineering, Robotics, Electrical Engineering, or related specialty with emphasis on dynamic system controls.
  • Minimum 10+ years of experience in controls algorithm development, systems analysis, modeling, and software implementation (medical device or safety-critical industry experience strongly preferred).
  • Proven expertise in robotics/mechatronics design and control at the product level.
  • Experience with modeling and control of compliant and continuum robotic systems strongly desired.
  • Proficiency in production-level C++ software is a nice-to-have.
  • Familiarity with advanced computer vision and AI/deep learning integration into control systems.
  • Demonstrated success leading technical projects in regulated environments (ISO 13485, IEC 60601, or equivalent).
Our salary ranges are calculated by role, level, and location. Please note that your position within that range will be determined by your job-related knowledge, location, skills, experience, relevant education, and training/certifications. The base salary range for this full-time position is between $180,000 - $210,000 + equity + benefits.
