Principal Deputy Clerk - Probate

About the Clerk's Office:

The Circuit Court Clerk’s Office is the administrative arm of the Circuit Court. Our day-to-day operations significantly impact the Chesterfield community. The Clerk’s Office prioritizes accessibility, transparency, effectiveness and being constituent focused. The staff within the Clerk’s Office are responsible for providing administrative support, record keeping, case management, court-related financial matters, and, most importantly, adhering to the law.

This position is part of an approved Career Development Plan (CDP) and offers career progression opportunities and salary incentives, as funding permits, based on performance, qualifications, and experience.

Responsibilities:

  • Conduct appointments to probate Wills and qualify fiduciaries
  • Maintain an attitude of compassion and helpfulness while also exercising high levels of discretion/confidentiality
  • Calculate and collect appropriate fees/taxes
  • Compile and proofread the Will and Bond Book indices
  • Provide a high volume of customer assistance in person, by phone, and by email
  • Serve as a liaison to the Commissioner of Accounts and the County’s Tax Assessor
  • Perform other duties and special projects as necessary

Minimum Qualifications:

High school diploma or GED; bachelor's degree in criminal justice/public administration or related field is preferred; three years of relevant experience in a court/legal environment; or equivalent combination of training and experience in a court/legal environment.

Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to research, comprehend, interpret, and apply the appropriate sections of The Code of Virginia
  • High attention to detail and excellent organizational skills
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and the ability to learn new software and technology
  • Ability to multitask in a busy environment and manage an independent workload

Customer service hours are Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and standard employee shift schedules are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., though flex scheduling is available. Due to the nature of the service we provide, teleworking is not an option.

Pre-employment drug testing, FBI criminal background check, and education/degree verification required.
