Principal Engineer

Friday 30 January 2026 Hybrid Working Level 6 will lead the technical development and delivery at Team, Lab and sometimes platform level. They can be a Line Manager who will act as co-lead with the Team PO for overall delivery. In these cases, they will be responsible for overall tech delivery, line management & app ownership alongside their own software engineering output. Others will operate as Individual Contributors, who are specialist experts in particular technology areas and will be narrower and deeper in focus, providing technology leadership, mentoring and guidance.

• Design, develop, and maintain complex software applications. Write clean, maintainable, and efficient code following best practices.
• Lead code reviews and all aspects of technical delivery to ensure code quality and share knowledge.
• Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies, and processes to ensure the highest quality product platform.
• Identify and implement best practices for software development.
• Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills to resolve complex technical issues and bugs.
• Provide technical guidance or mentorship to engineers.
• Strong understanding of security principles and secure coding practices.
• Knowledge of DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
• Ensure timely delivery by managing tasks and priorities effectively.
• Communicate effectively with team members and stakeholders.
• Accountability over tech debt remediation across own tech assets.*
• Line management focused on effective task allocation and tech delivery.*
• Line manage one or more junior SEs.*
• Evaluate and recommend tools, technologies, and processes to ensure the highest quality product platform.
• Provide hands-on support in troubleshooting, performance tuning, and reliability improvements.
• Mentor other engineers, including early-career engineers, by sharing knowledge, guiding professional behaviours, and adopting best practices.
• Build highly engaged, collaborative communities; drive innovation by exploring emerging technologies and methodologies.
• Communicate effectively with stakeholders, understand requirements, provide updates, and influence strategic decisions.
• Apply both traditional and agile best practices to plan, prioritise, and deliver work efficiently.

• Proficient at least two programming languages and apply them effectively to solve complex problems.
