Purpose of Position
This role advances Timken’s global manufacturing technology by developing, applying, and implementing metrology and inspection solutions to improve product quality, reduce manufacturing cost, and enable new production systems. The engineer will apply dimensional and surface metrology principles, calibrate and evaluate measurement systems, and support global plant sites.
Key Responsibilities
- Develop and deploy metrology and gauging solutions (CMM, optical measurement, on-machine probing) and provide technical support across Timken’s global manufacturing footprint.
- Perform calibration and measuring uncertainty evaluation of metrology equipment.
- Contribute to technical strategy for bearing metrology and gauging deployment.
- Lead/support capital projects: specify equipment, manage installations, debug/startups, and manage appropriation requisitions, cost tracking, and project delivery within budget.
- Perform product/process rationalization and benchmarking to support manufacturing decisions and cost comparisons.
- Manage departmental projects using project-management tools, resource planning, and corrective actions to ensure timely completion.
- Drive continuous improvement initiatives focused on metrology/gauging to boost throughput, quality, and safety, support plant teams through implementation and evaluation.
- Travel internationally and domestically as required (up to ~25%).
Required Skills & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical or Manufacturing Engineering (Master’s preferred).
- Minimum 7 years’ relevant experience.
- Advanced experience with CMM operation, calibration and maintenance.
- Strong understanding of GD&T, engineering drawings, metrology standards, calibration methods and measurement uncertainty evaluation.
- Experience with optical measurement methods and on-machine gauging.
- Proficiency with statistical analysis of measurement systems (e.g., JMP) and root-cause/variance analysis.
- Demonstrated project management skills and effective communication; strong collaborative/team orientation.
- Willingness for hands-on problem solving and global travel.
