Our mission is to explore how new technologies can unlock entirely new operating and business models in the energy sector. Amazon Special Projects is seeking an accomplished North American energy-sector leader to join a small, high-impact team that incubates and launches new strategic businesses for Amazon. Reporting directly to the General Manager of the initiative, you will serve as the team's subject-matter expert and trusted strategic advisor on the highly regulated and relationship-driven U.S. power and utilities landscape.
Key job responsibilities
- Serve as the subject-matter expert on North American energy regulation, utility operating models, rate-making, procurement, and the broader energy ecosystem — including investor-owned utilities, public power entities, cooperatives, grid operators, and regulatory bodies
- Leverage deep industry relationships and credibility across utilities, regulatory commissions, federal agencies, and industry organizations to accelerate strategic engagements and establish trust with key stakeholders
- Drive business development by identifying, negotiating, and closing design partnerships, pilots, and revenue-generating agreements with utilities — shaping Amazon's future in energy through strategic, high-impact deals
- Translate regulatory and operational complexity into product strategy, commercial models, and market entry sequencing that accounts for real-world constraints and unlocks new pathways to value
- Collaborate cross-functionally with corporate development, legal, finance, and technical teams to establish compliance frameworks and go-to-market strategies tailored to the energy sector
- Shape strategic narratives that communicate sector insights, opportunity sizing, and partnership value to senior Amazon leadership, enabling informed decision-making at the highest levels
- Identify and champion emerging trends in energy technology, grid modernization, distributed energy resources, and regulatory reform — connecting the dots between market shifts and Amazon's long-term strategic positioning
A day in the life
Your days blend strategic analysis with hands-on partnership development: engaging directly with utility executives and regulatory leaders, translating intricate operational and regulatory constraints into compelling business strategies, and crafting executive narratives that distill sector complexity into clear, actionable insights. You'll negotiate pilots and commercial agreements, collaborate with legal, finance, and technical teams to navigate compliance frameworks, and balance external relationship building (~25% domestic travel) with internal strategy development — always working backwards from real-world constraints to identify transformative opportunities.
