Role Overview: The Product Design Engineer 2 plays a vital role in the design and development of new equipment. This role involves collaborating closely with Electrical Engineers and Process Engineers to conceptualize and engineer innovative solutions. The Product Design Engineer 2 is responsible for reviewing Bills of Materials (BOMs), drawings, creating sequence of operations, selecting refrigeration and hydronics components and creating equipment submittal documents. Additionally, this position focuses on optimizing existing designs for cost-effectiveness and reliability by identifying opportunities for cost cuts and evaluating alternate parts. Document control is a critical aspect of this role to ensure accurate records and seamless communication throughout the design process.

1. Design Development & Engineering Collaboration

  • Collaborate with System Design Engineers, Process Engineers, and manufacturing teams to develop and refine equipment designs.
  • Participate in design reviews to improve product performance, reliability, and manufacturability.
  • Review product designs for completeness, feasibility, and production readiness.
  • Provide technical expertise related to equipment design and system functionality.
  • Troubleshoot new and existing product issues involving design, materials, or processes.

2. Technical Design Execution & Component Selection

  • Select refrigeration and hydronic components specific to equipment design requirements.
  • Create equipment sequences of operation aligned with system functionality and customer specifications.
  • Evaluate alternate materials or components for cost, reliability, and performance while ensuring compatibility with design standards.

3. Documentation, Drawings & Submittals

  • Review Bills of Materials (BOMs) for accuracy, completeness, and compliance with engineering standards.
  • Verify dimensional accuracy, tolerances, and adherence to design standards in engineering drawings.
  • Create equipment submittal documents, including technical specifications, drawings, and performance data, for customer approval and project documentation.
  • Maintain document control by accurately recording design changes, revisions, and process updates.

4. Cost Optimization & Value Engineering

  • Identify and implement cost-reduction opportunities within existing designs through value engineering initiatives.
  • Evaluate design improvements that enhance product reliability, manufacturability, and long-term performance.
  • Support initiatives aimed at improving quality while protecting margin.

5. Product Evaluation & Quality Support

  • Evaluate manufactured products to ensure compliance with specifications and quality standards.
  • Support manufacturing teams in resolving design-related production issues.

6. Professional Standards & Compliance

  • Maintain a safe and clean working environment in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
  • Comply with government regulations, company policies, and internal procedures.
  • Attend work as outlined in the Employee Handbook and complete additional duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Remain current with developments in the HVACR and manufacturing industries through professional development and continued learning.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Education: Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering.
  • Experience: 5 – 10 years of engineering experience; or 3+ years in HVACR equipment design.
  • Skills: Ability to use Microsoft product software. Talented, highly motivated individual with good engineering judgment. Effective oral and written communication skills. Ability to manage multiple projects concurrently in a fast paced manufacturing environment. Strong interpersonal and leadership skills. Ability to guide and influence others. Must have basic computer skills.
  • Certificates, Licenses, or Training: FE license preferred.

Interaction with Others: Answers to Director of Engineering, NAP. Must be able to accurately receive and understand instructions from supervisor to determine if further instruction is required before attempting to complete the task assigned. In constant communication with other departments. It is essential that the employee is able to work with all employees of the RAE team and shows a spirit of cooperation with others in the organization.

Working Environment:

Primarily conducted in a climate-controlled office setting, with occasional exposure to a manufacturing environment including moving mechanical parts and vehicles. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
