Product Intern

San Jose, United States

Description

About this opportunity

As a Product Management Intern, you will have an exciting opportunity to support the definition and delivery of the product vision for Ortho, Ortho Restorative and Retention products and services on the Align Digital Platform. These products integrate with visualization experiences on the iTero scanner, Invisalign Doctor Site web portal, and practice and patient mobile apps. Key stakeholders include orthodontists, general dentists, patients, dental lab technicians, dental service organizations, universities, and public hospitals.

You will collaborate with product designers, marketing managers, engineers, data scientists, and others to help build impactful Align Digital Platform products. We’re looking for a curious, entrepreneurial learner who brings a passion for innovation, strong communication and analytical skills, and a willingness to contribute in a fast-moving environment. In this role you will,

Define Product Vision – Support product managers by researching customer needs, gathering inputs for the roadmap, and contributing ideas for innovation and small experiments under guidance.

Engage Customers – Assist with scheduling and shadowing customer conversations, capture notes, synthesize pain points, and help propose low-effort improvements to increase adoption.

Drive execution of Product Planning and Development – Help document customer goals and basic business requirements, track progress against release checklists, and assist in preparing simple positioning and release notes.

Lead Product Definition – Contribute to “working backwards” documents by compiling customer and market feedback, basic competitive snapshots, and simple metrics summaries to inform direction (PM-owned).

Lead Product Launch – Support the go‑to‑market plan by preparing FAQs, demo scripts, training materials, and internal briefs; help coordinate cross‑functional tasks to meet launch goals.

Lead Operations – Monitor feedback channels, log and triage issues, track follow-ups, and suggest incremental, data‑informed improvements.

Lead interaction with Engineering team – Assist with backlog hygiene, write basic user stories and acceptance criteria, help with QA/UAT test cases, and document tradeoffs discussed by PMs and engineers.

Influence senior leaders across Align Technology and communicate the Align Digital Platform vision, strategy, goals, status, and customer impact – Help prepare concise status updates, dashboards, and slides that enable PMs to communicate progress and insights to leadership.

In this role, you will…

  • Build a foundational understanding of Align customers (Orthodontists, Dentists, Labs, DSOs, etc.) through desk research and guided customer interactions; capture notes and share clear takeaways with cross‑functional teams.
  • Learn the customer’s jobs‑to‑be‑done (JTBD) and how customers measure success; help document workflows and success metrics.
  • Practice customer empathy by transforming qualitative and quantitative insights into organized problem statements and backlog suggestions.
  • Learn Align’s strategic and competitive position and help summarize trends that inform product decisions.
  • Maintain a light competitive landscape view to understand market positioning, identify gaps, and propose low‑lift experiments to explore solutions.
  • Support opportunity sizing and roadmap inputs aligned to broader organizational strategies and goals.
  • Compile data, research, and market analysis to inform recommendations; help maintain simple dashboards for adoption and engagement.
  • Contribute to business case templates with basic models (e.g., TAM assumptions, directional revenue/COGS inputs) under mentorship from PMs.
  • Assist coordination between internal development and partnership activities (no contract negotiation), maintaining trackers for product changes, basic forecasting inputs, and operational tasks.
  • Coordinate across marketing, sales, operations, R&D, and customer service; learn quality systems and regulatory considerations and follow established SOPs.
  • Help evangelize the product by drafting internal communications, preparing demo environments, and supporting trade show or event logistics.
  • Collaborate effectively with engineers, data scientists, and designers to help deliver incremental value.
  • Demonstrate grit—own your tasks end‑to‑end, seek clarity when needed, and follow through reliably.
  • Thrive in a dynamic environment where process evolves and creative solutions are encouraged.
  • Be a proactive problem solver, escalating risks early and proposing practical next steps with guidance.
  • Contribute to an inclusive, innovative team environment.
  • Stay intellectually curious, be comfortable with technical concepts, and bring a sense of humor and humility.

In this role, you’ll need …
  • Currently pursuing a degree in Business, Marketing, Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.
  • Relevant coursework, projects, campus leadership, or a prior internship/co‑op are a plus (not required).
  • Interest in Healthcare/Medical/Dental technology and regulated environments is advantageous.
  • Foundational understanding of product management or software development concepts; familiarity with SaaS helpful.
  • Exposure to Agile/Scrum, writing user stories, or QA/testing is beneficial.
  • Strong analytical, organization, and written/verbal communication skills; attention to detail.
  • Curiosity about machine learning/AI concepts and the ability to translate technical ideas into simple narratives (no deep expertise required).
  • Team‑oriented mindset; ability to collaborate across diverse, cross‑functional teams.
  • Creativity and initiative—comfortable proposing ideas and executing small, well‑scoped tasks.
  • Comfort working with distributed/global teammates and across time zones (as needed).
  • Professionalism and respect in all interactions; commitment to quality and compliance.
  • Growth mindset—open to feedback, able to manage multiple tasks, and eager to learn quickly.
