Product Safety Engineer

Job Summary

POSITION SUMMARY

As a safety engineer at Clark you will be responsible for overseeing products sourced from the extensive global supply chain and ensure they meet internal and external standards for safety risks and mitigation. This role will lead initiatives to evaluate product safety risks, develop mitigation and corrective action strategies and ensure adherence to industry standards and requirements.

  • Define and implement the product safety strategy across key product categories
  • Serve as the subject matter expert on safety engineering practices, guiding cross functional teams through design, development, and post-market phases
  • Perform hazard analyses and risk assessments for new and existing products, recommending design improvements, process changes or new technologies to enhance product safety
  • Collaborate with supplier engineering teams to integrate safety features and mitigation methods into product architecture
  • Support product compliance teams to ensure all products comply with relevant safety standards and certifications
  • Collaborate with cross functional teams, such as sourcing, quality, and merchant teams, to evaluate and qualify new suppliers based on technical capability, safety history and compliance.
  • Track and analyze product safety metrics, including but not limited to, field defect rates, production non-conformances, customer complaints, star ratings, warranty repairs, and product claims.
  • Investigate escalated product safety concerns and work with cross-functional internal teams diagnose potential root causes and mitigation methods
  • Oversee internal and external safety testing protocols for electrical, mechanical, and chemical risks
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for escalated safety concerns across the organization
  • Create and maintain technical safety documentation including design safety reviews, and incident tracking
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams to manage field actions, such as quarantine or product recall, when necessary
  • Train the organization on product safety best practices, and ensure learnings are captured for future use.

Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed while sitting/standing and interfacing with a personal computer.
  • Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.
  • Requires the regular use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations.
  • Requires occasional bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, and reaching.
  • Requires the ability to occasionally lift, carry, push, or pull medium weights, up to 50lbs.

Remote Work Qualifications

  • Access to a reliable and secure high-speed internet connection. Cable or fiber internet connections (at least 75mbps download/10mbps upload) are preferred, as satellite connections often cannot support the technologies used to perform day-to-day tasks.
  • Access to a home router and modem.
  • A dedicated home office space that is noise- and distraction-free. The space should have strong wireless connection or a wired Ethernet connection (wired connection is preferred, if possible).
  • A valid, physical address (apartment, suite, etc.). PO Boxes are not supported, as a physical address is required for you to receive your computer equipment.
  • The desire and ability to work and communicate with other team members via chat, webcam, etc.

Experience

  • A minimum of seven (7) years of related experience, with increasing responsibilities, in a global supply chain.
  • Should have strong experience evaluating product safety or risk assessment in a durable consumer products or appliances industry.
  • Preferred: ASQ or CSP certification or equivalent

Education

This role does not require a degree. We value relevant skills and experience and alignment with our core values above all else.

Desired Traits & Skills

  • Strong comprehension and use of risk management tools: FMEA, fault tree analysis, risk matrices, statistical analyses
  • Experience working with prescribed product safety standards and organizations such as UL, TUV, NSF, ISO, CPSC, etc
  • Proficiency with MS Office required (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills; ability to explain technical and complex concepts in a simple and concise way to ensure ease of understanding
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple assignments and deadlines in a fast-paced environment
  • Ability to quickly adapt as business needs change; ability to address difficult situations with diplomacy and emotional intelligence
  • Customer service-oriented attitude with a demonstrated desire to exceed expectations
