Position Summary(Basic Job Function)

This is a temporary or an on-call position. Provides professional support. Responsibilities may include general business, science, medical, agricultural or other professional support functions. Term: Temps can work two (2) nine (9) month terms with a week break in service in between and at the end of the second term terminate for three (3) months or switch to an on-call. On-Call allowed to work 1039 hours in any twelve (12) month period.

Unit Position Summary

WKAR is seeking a Freelance Multi-Platform News Reporter to cover news in Michigan’s Capital Region, including Ingham, Clinton, and Shiawassee counties. This is a digital-first reporting position, with stories appearing across WKAR’s website, radio newscasts, and social media channels.

This role requires a journalist with proven news judgment, a solid understanding of journalism ethics, and the ability to produce accurate, balanced, and fair reporting. The ideal candidate has a journalism background and is confident working independently in the field, producing timely, high-quality content for multiple platforms.

Desired Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in journalism or equivalent professional experience.

Minimum one year of professional reporting experience (this is not an entry-level position).

Strong reporting, writing, and editing skills for digital and broadcast platforms.

Understanding of journalism ethics, balance, and editorial processes.

Proven ability to make sound news judgments under deadline pressure.

Ability to shoot and edit video (smartphone or camera-based)

Experience producing audio content.

Proficiency in social media platforms for news gathering and distribution.

Reliable transportation and willingness to travel throughout the coverage area.
