Job Summary
The New Student and Family Programs Office collaborates with faculty, staff, and students, to welcome all incoming students and their families to the University of Colorado Boulder by:
Serving as a centralized hub through programs and services that equip students with resources, guidance, and peer connections to help facilitate a successful transition to CU Boulder and develop successful members of our community.
Offering intentional and timely opportunities to engage with academic units, support services and community members.
Providing experiences that cultivate community, celebrate traditions, and set campus expectations that encourage pride and a sense of belonging.
The Program Coordinator directly reports to the Assistant Director for New Student and Family Programs and will assist in all facets of the planning, preparation, and execution of a robust and intentional new student on-boarding process rooted in data and student development theory.
Specific responsibilities include managing New Student Orientation programs for 6,750 incoming students by assisting with the planning and execution of 15, 2-day orientation sessions through the summer, developing program content, helping train and prepare student staff, and leading campus partner/volunteer involvement. This position also contributes to the day-to-day facilitation of the Journey Leader program and is responsible for liaising with the Graduate School to lead the planning and management of Graduate Student Orientation.
This position requires excellent customer service, attention to detail, organizational, and communications skills.

Who We Are
New Student & Family Programs is pleased and proud to support incoming CU Boulder students and their families throughout their transition into our academic community! We then continue supporting family members throughout their student's experience at CU Boulder.
We carry out our mission through a combination of in-person orientations, online orientation modules, and extended orientation programs throughout the summer for incoming students; population-specific orientations (such as International Student Orientation and Graduate Student Orientation), small group meetups, and large-scale signature events as part of Fall Welcome and Spring Welcome; the Transfer Buffs Living Learning Community and other transfer student-focused events throughout the year; and a full slate of programs for both new and returning families, including Family Webinars and Coffee Hours, Family Welcome Tents during move-in, Family Weekend, and more. Additionally, our office houses the Academic Success and Achievement Program (ASAP) peer tutoring program for first-year and residential students.
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Program Management
- Develop and manage comprehensive welcome and orientation programs rooted in a broad approach to onboarding and engagement strategies that align with Orientation, Transition, and Retention (OTR) standard processes and relevant student development theories for first year experience events and programs.
- Plan and implement 15, 2-day, in-person New Student Orientations to provide timely resources and encourage community building for 6,750 incoming students, including developing and assessing goals and learning objectives, creating content for all and presenting all aspects of the program, overseeing campus partner and volunteer training and participation, managing back-end processes and logistics, and coordinating the overnight housing, accessibility request, and fee waiver processes.
- Support the New Student Welcome Experience by contributing to the Online Experience and virtual New Student and Transfer Student Orientations, as well as supporting the Course Registration and Enrollment Management Process and collaborative Spring and Fall Welcome initiatives and programs.
- Lead all aspects of planning and assessing a 1-day Graduate Student Orientation during Fall Welcome, in partnership with the Graduate School.
- Support all event management logistics including room reservations and scheduling, catering and dining requests as well as outsourced rentals and contracts.
- Oversee budgetary management for all associated finances and purchases, totaling approximately $1 million annually.
- Work in collaboration with NSFP staff and Student Life Marketing & Communications to establish deliberate marketing and communication strategies (i.e. website, publications, and social media content) targeted for respective populations and programs.
Student Development and Leadership
- Teach one section of a 1 credit Journey Leader course and provide feedback on course content during the annual curriculum review.
- Supervise 3-5 Journey Leader Mentors, who are employed on a full-year contract cycle to support NSFP professional staff in all programming and Journey Leader training.
- Contribute to and co-facilitate a robust Journey Leader and Journey Leader Mentor training and development program for onboarding and year-round leadership development.
- Contribute to the annual recruitment and selection process for Journey Leaders and Journey Leader Mentors.
- Develop and implement event-specific training and documents that provide up-to-date information to ensure accurate information sharing about their roles and responsibilities.
- Facilitate quarterly performance reviews and evaluation plans on a consistent and timely basis.
- Manage timesheet review and approval process.
- Serve as a daytime crisis response manager for student emergencies during programs, and train Journey Leaders and Journey Leader Mentors on emergency protocol.
Partnerships and Collaboration
- Work closely with campus wide offices and departments to execute the New Student Welcome Experience. Significant department collaborations include, but are not limited to: Admissions, Advising Units in Schools/Colleges, Office of Information Technology (OIT), University Information Systems (UIS), Student Life, Undergraduate Education, Conference Services, Events Planning & Catering, Student Life Marketing & Communications, and the Graduate School.
- Serve as a liaison to campus committees and representing office at regional and national conferences.
Strategic Planning and Assessment
- Contribute to the development and achievement of the New Student and Family Programs Strategic Plan through annual assessment and creation of goals and learning outcomes.
- Design and implement a comprehensive assessment and evaluation framework for New Student Orientations.
Office and Customer Service Management
- Support central office operation, customer service management, and emergency and crisis response practices.
- Provide front line office support as needed including greeting and supporting guests in person, via telephone system operation, email, text messages, and live chats.
- Track office inventory and general operation needs.
- Occasional evening and weekend commitments are required. Longer hours should be expected during highly programmatic times, including select dates in June and July (summer orientation programs), August (Fall Welcome), October (Family Weekend) and January (Spring Welcome).
- Provide secondary support to office staff in the execution of all office operation and programmatic efforts.

This is a hybrid work opportunity with regular working hours Monday - Friday and some occasional weekend requirements.
What We Can Offer
- The pay for this position is $52,000 - $55,919.

What We Require
- A master's degree from an accredited college or university.
- 1+ year of related experience working with college students, parents, families, and support systems in a college environment, which may include graduate assistantships or internships.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience may substitute.
- Demonstrated experience in supervising and training student staff.

- A master's degree in higher education, student affairs administration, or a similar field from an accredited college or university.
- Demonstrated experience in program development and implementation.

- Practical understanding and experience of Student Development Theory.
