We are currently seeking a dedicated Project Accountant to join our finance team and support the financial management of our diverse construction and mechanical contracting projects.

Job Summary The Project Accountant will play a key role in managing the financial aspects of our mechanical construction projects. This position ensures accurate job costing, budgeting, invoicing, and financial reporting for projects involving HVAC, plumbing, piping, and related mechanical systems. Working closely with project managers, estimators, and subcontractors, you will help keep projects financially on track, maintain compliance, and contribute to the overall success of J.M. Brennan's operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage project financials, including setting up project budgets, tracking costs, and monitoring expenses against budgets for mechanical contracting projects.
  • Prepare and process owner billings, pay applications, and subcontractor invoices; review for accuracy, compliance, and proper documentation (e.g., lien waivers, insurance certificates).
  • Handle accounts payable and receivable related to projects, including verifying invoices, processing payments, and reconciling accounts.
  • Assist with job cost analysis, forecasting, variance reporting, and identifying potential cost overruns or savings opportunities.
  • Support change order processes, including tracking potential change items (PCIs), pricing, approvals, and updates to project financials.
  • Prepare monthly financial reports, project status updates, and other accounting documentation for project managers and leadership.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies, contract terms, and relevant accounting standards in the construction/mechanical contracting industry.
  • Collaborate with project teams to resolve financial queries, provide cost insights, and support project closeouts.
  • Maintain accurate records in accounting systems and contribute to process improvements.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Accounting, Finance, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience in accounting, preferably in construction, mechanical contracting, or a related field (e.g., engineering services, general contracting, or project-based industries).
  • Strong understanding of job costing, project budgeting, and construction financial cycles.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (experience with construction-specific tools like Sage, Procore, or similar is a plus).
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical skills, and ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Strong communication skills to work effectively with project managers, subcontractors, vendors, and internal teams.
  • Knowledge of construction contracts, billing practices, and compliance requirements (e.g., lien laws, insurance) is preferred.

Pay: $70,000.00 - $90,000.00 per year
