Key Responsibilities
- Planning & Coordination
- Review project drawings & specifications related to gypsum work (ceilings, partitions, decorative moldings etc.).
- Assist in creating work schedules / phasing for gypsum installation, finishing, and inspection.
- Coordinate among trades (electrical, plumbing, HVAC, finishing, etc.) to ensure that gypsum work doesn’t conflict with other work (e.g. ensure services are installed before gypsum is closed up).
- Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Ensure workmanship meets quality standards (flatness, jointing, tolerance, finish).
- Inspect gypsum installation at various stages (before taping, finishing, painting) and identify defects (gaps, misalignment, bulging, cracking).
- Ensure compliance with local building codes, fire ratings, acoustic or thermal performance if applicable.
- Budget, Cost Control & Reporting
- Track the gypsum work budget; monitor costs, labor and material usage.
- Process and verify invoices from subcontractors / suppliers for gypsum work.
- Prepare periodic reports for the manager / client about progress, cost overruns, or risks.
- Scheduling & Time Management
- Monitor progress of gypsum work vs schedule; flag delays or obstacles.
- Adjust schedules or resource allocation to keep work on track.
- Coordinate labour (skilled plasterers, finishers), subcontractors, and ensure hours match scheduling requirements.
- Health, Safety & Environment
- Ensure safe working practices are followed: scaffolding, lifting boards, dust control, protective equipment etc.
- Ensure that materials and installations comply with environmental / safety standards (like fire-rated boards, moisture-resistant boards in wet areas).
- Conduct site safety inspections relevant to gypsum installation.
- Communication & Stakeholder Liaison
- Communicate with site management, subcontractors, suppliers, architects/inspectors about design changes, issues, or clarifications.
- Attend coordination meetings; capture meeting minutes; follow up on action items.
- Liaise with client / consultant for approvals (shop drawings, mock-ups, finish samples).
- Documentation & Submittals
- Manage submittals: shop drawings, sample boards, finish samples, technical data sheets etc.
- Maintain a drawings register, change orders, request for information (RFIs), site instructions.
- Keep all documentation up to date: work logs, daily/weekly progress reports, defect lists, punch lists.
- Problem Solving & Change Management
- Identify issues arising from design errors, site conditions, materials deficiencies etc. and help resolve them.
- Manage scope changes: cost impacts, schedule impacts, getting approvals for change orders.
- Project Closeout & Handover
- Inspect final gypsum work; ensure all defects have been corrected.
- Prepare closeout documentation: warranties, maintenance instructions, finishes and certifications.
- Handover completed gypsum portions in alignment with overall project handover.
