Project Designer I (Mechanical Engineering) – New York, NY

Position Purpose:

Join our team to design innovative Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) and plumbing/fire-protection systems with a focus on sustainable solutions for the built environment. In this role, you'll conduct comprehensive surveys of existing mechanical systems, perform energy calculations, and develop long-term sustainability analyses for building upgrades. You'll review contractor work, prepare documentation, and create digital designs that contribute to New York City's zero-carbon future.

Role Responsibilities:

  • Design cutting-edge HVAC, plumbing, and fire-protection distribution systems that prioritize sustainability and efficiency
  • Conduct thorough walkthroughs and surveys of existing buildings, documenting all components that impact energy consumption through measurements, photos, and equipment inventory
  • Perform energy modeling calculations using both basic hand/Excel methods and sophisticated computer simulations to demonstrate energy savings of various construction solutions
  • Develop expertise in New York City's building codes, laws, and legislation related to energy reduction and the transition to a zero-carbon, all-electric future
  • Create comprehensive summary documentation including photo reports, site markups, and clear verbal communications
  • Produce precise digital drafting of schematic and detailed construction documents using both AutoCAD and Revit for various mechanical, plumbing, and fire-protection projects

Position Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related field and/or applicable work experience
  • 0-3 years of experience in mechanical engineering of buildings and/or design supporting existing building projects
  • Understanding of design processes, compliance requirements, and collaboration with various construction professionals
  • Excellent prioritization and organizational skills to thrive in our dynamic, evolving environment
  • Working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer calculations, building load/energy modeling, and energy conservation principles
  • Prior internship experience in a mechanical engineering design consulting firm preferred
  • Ability to travel throughout the five boroughs of New York City; valid driver's license and safe driving record required
  • Physical capability to navigate urban, rural, and industrial sites, including walking fire escapes, stairwells, and basement areas
  • Comfort working in both temperature-controlled office environments and various indoor field inspection settings

Required Skills

Bachelor’s degree in a related field and/or applicable work experience.
0-3 years of mechanical engineering of buildings and/or design in support of various existing building projects and initiatives. Understanding of processes, compliance, and other design consulting and construction professionals.
Adhere to all Structures Group Special Competencies and Certifications listed within the Appendix A.
The ability to prioritize effectively, balance assigned work and exceptional organization skills required for our constantly evolving environment
Working knowledge of thermodynamics, heat transfer calculations, building load/energy modeling tasks, and energy conservation principles
Prior internship experience in a consulting firm with emphasis on mechanical engineering design preferred.
Pay Range
$70,000.00 Annually to $80,000.00 Annually
