Project Manager (Transportation & Infrastructure)Position Summary

Vertex Engineering is seeking an experienced Project Manager to lead and manage transportation, transit, infrastructure, utility, and public works projects throughout New York and New Jersey.

The Project Manager will be responsible for planning, coordinating, and overseeing all phases of project delivery, including scope, schedule, budget, quality, safety, risk management, stakeholder coordination, and contract administration. The successful candidate will serve as a key liaison between clients, contractors, designers, consultants, and project stakeholders to ensure projects are delivered successfully and in accordance with client objectives.

This position may support projects for agencies including MTA, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ, Amtrak, NYSDOT, NJDOT, and municipal clients.

Key ResponsibilitiesProject Leadership

  • Lead the planning, execution, monitoring, and closeout of infrastructure projects.
  • Manage multidisciplinary project teams, consultants, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Establish project objectives, priorities, and performance metrics.
  • Ensure successful delivery of projects in accordance with scope, schedule, budget, quality, and safety requirements.

Project Planning & Controls

  • Develop and maintain project management plans.
  • Monitor project schedules, budgets, forecasts, and resource utilization.
  • Coordinate with project controls, cost estimating, and scheduling teams.
  • Identify project risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Track project performance and implement corrective actions as necessary.

Contract Administration

  • Administer construction and professional service contracts.
  • Review and manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, claims, and contract modifications.
  • Monitor contractor performance and compliance with contract requirements.
  • Support procurement, bid evaluations, and consultant selections.

Stakeholder Management

  • Serve as the primary point of contact for clients and project stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with owner agencies, utilities, regulatory agencies, and community stakeholders.
  • Lead project meetings and prepare project status presentations.
  • Communicate project progress, risks, and issues to senior leadership and clients.

Construction Management Oversight

  • Coordinate with Resident Engineers, Construction Managers, Inspectors, and Safety personnel.
  • Monitor field activities and construction progress.
  • Support resolution of field issues and technical challenges.
  • Ensure compliance with project specifications, permits, and regulatory requirements.

Quality & Safety Management

  • Promote a culture of safety, quality, and accountability.
  • Ensure implementation of project quality management and safety plans.
  • Monitor project compliance with owner requirements and industry standards.
  • Support audits, inspections, and corrective action initiatives.

Financial Management

  • Manage project budgets, forecasts, and financial reporting.
  • Review invoices, payment applications, and cost reports.
  • Monitor project expenditures and identify cost-saving opportunities.
  • Support project profitability and financial performance objectives.

Documentation & Reporting

  • Prepare executive-level reports, presentations, and project updates.
  • Maintain project records and documentation.
  • Develop monthly project status reports and performance dashboards.
  • Support project closeout and lessons-learned activities.

QualificationsEducation

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering, Construction Management, Architecture, Project Management, or related field required.

Experience

  • Minimum 10 years of project management, construction management, engineering, or infrastructure delivery experience.
  • Experience managing transportation, transit, rail, stations, bridges, roadway, utility, or public infrastructure projects preferred.
  • Experience with public agencies such as MTA, NJ TRANSIT, PANYNJ, NYSDOT, NJDOT, Amtrak, or similar owners preferred.
  • Experience with design-build, progressive design-build, CMAR, or traditional delivery methods preferred.

Certifications

One or more of the following preferred:

  • Project Management Professional (PMP)
  • Professional Engineer (PE)
  • Certified Construction Manager (CCM)
  • PMI Agile Certifications
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Safety

Knowledge and Skills

  • Strong knowledge of project management principles and infrastructure project delivery.
  • Experience managing complex, multi-stakeholder projects.
  • Understanding of construction management, contract administration, scheduling, and cost controls.
  • Ability to interpret plans, specifications, schedules, and contract documents.
  • Strong leadership, negotiation, and decision-making abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, Primavera P6, Procore, e-Builder, Oracle Primavera Cloud, or similar project management platforms.

Employment Type

Compensation

Compensation commensurate with experience, certifications, project complexity, and assignment requirements.

Typical compensation ranges:

  • Project Manager: $120,000–$220,000 annually
  • Senior Project Manager: $160,000–$250,000 annually
