Property & Evidence Technician - VIF - Denver Sheriff Department

The Denver Sheriff Department is the largest sheriff agency in the State of Colorado, comprised of over 1,000 uniformed and civilian staff across a wide range of divisions and operations. These include two jail facilities, security for District and County courts, inmate transportation and extradition services, fugitive and K-9 units, and security operations at Denver Health Medical Center.

The Department is currently seeking qualified candidates for the position of Property and Evidence Technician.

Candidate must be able and willing to work both indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions at the Vehicle Impound Facility, performing duties related to the receipt, storage, security, and release of impounded vehicles and associated property.

This position requires regular interaction with uniformed officers, tow operators, department personnel, and members of the public. Candidates must be comfortable working in an outdoor environment and handling materials that may be related to criminal investigations.

The Vehicle Impound Facility operates 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. As such, this position requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends, holidays, and varying shifts. The facility is located at 5160 York Street, Denver, CO 80126.

All selected candidates must successfully complete a background investigation, including verification of employment and criminal history, and pass both a polygraph examination and drug screening.

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Verify vehicle information, including make, model, color, VIN, and other identifying details. Please note that vehicles may occasionally contain biological materials, drugs or illicit paraphernalia, weapons, or other hazardous items

  • Escort tow truck operators to designated storage locations for impounded vehicles

  • Conduct routine patrols of the facility and monitor surveillance systems to identify and address unauthorized activity

  • Interact with members of the public, including de-escalating situations involving upset or frustrated individuals

  • Enter and update data within the Colorado Crime Information Center (CCIC) and National Crime Information Center (NCIC) systems

  • Create and maintain accurate vehicle records within the Aries internal database

  • Maintain proper chain of custody for vehicles held as evidence, including those involved in fingerprinting/warrants and criminal investigations

  • Reviews and analysis of legal conditions set by the City Attorney for vehicle release or the removal of personal property

  • Respond to inquiries regarding impounded vehicles and law enforcement matters via phone

  • Perform additional duties as assigned in support of facility and departmental operations

Our Ideal Candidate will have:

  • Strong attention to detail with a task-oriented mindset

  • Proficiency in basic computer skills, including typing and data entry

  • The ability to effectively use auditory and visual observation to assess situations and communicate clearly with tow truck operators

  • A customer service-focused mindset with strong interpersonal skills

Below are the minimum requirements used to determine eligibility for this position:

  • Education requirement: Graduation from high school or the possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.

  • Experience Requirement: One year of work experience in evidence handling or in the law enforcement field.

  • Education/Experience Equivalency: Additional appropriate education may be substituted for the minimum experience requirement.

  • License/Certifications: By position, requires a valid Driver's License at the time of application.

  • Licenses and certifications must be kept current as a condition of employment.
