Job Summary
We are seeking a highly skilled Protection & Controls Engineer to join our team, providing expert-level substation protection and control design, engineering, commissioning, testing, maintenance, and technical support across a wide range of utility and industrial projects. This includes medium- and high-voltage substations, battery energy storage systems, and solar collector substations. The role combines leadership of technical teams, hands-on field work, project management, and client engagement to deliver safe, cost-effective, and high-quality services. The incumbent will lead and mentor engineers and technicians, serve as the technical authority for P&C systems, perform responsible-charge engineering duties, and ensure project deliverables meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality standards.
Duties
- Lead and mentor a multidisciplinary technical team of engineers, designers, and technicians.
- Provide technical direction, training, and development for junior staff and drafters/designers.
- Support business development through proposal input, client presentations, and technical expertise.
- Oversee project schedules, budgets, and quality control processes.
- Develop and refine P&C designs including one-line and three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, panel layouts, and wiring diagrams.
- Design protection schemes for bus, line, capacitor, and transformer equipment including relay settings.
- Specify and design SCADA communication systems and substation layouts.
- Write engineering specifications and implement them in project deliverables.
- Perform system studies including fault current, voltage drop, and insulation coordination.
- Perform and/or oversee acceptance testing, commissioning, and maintenance of substation equipment including transformers, switchgear, circuit breakers, protective relays, power cables, grounding systems, and associated P&C systems.
- Troubleshoot and resolve complex electrical and control system issues during installation and operation.
- Conduct relay functional testing, end-to-end testing, and system integration checks.
- Ensure adherence to OSHA, NETA, NFPA 70E, and company safety policies.
- Prepare and maintain detailed test reports, as-built documentation, and compliance records.
Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (required).
- Minimum 8+ years of experience in protection & controls engineering, with at least 2+ years in field testing/commissioning of medium- to high-voltage systems.
- NETA Level III or IV certification (required).
- Licensed Professional Engineer (preferred).
- Experience in utility, renewable energy, and industrial substation projects (preferred).
- Familiarity with multiple client design standards and project management methodologies (preferred).
- Proficiency with industry-standard testing equipment and engineering software (preferred).
- Proven ability to lead technical teams and manage multiple projects.
- Advanced knowledge of substation protection principles, SCADA systems, and substation design/construction practices.
- Strong understanding of electrical safety standards, lockout/tagout, arc flash, and shock hazard procedures.
- Valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to travel extensively to project sites. Licenses/Certifications: Valid driver’s license; Certifications in electrical testing and safety standards (e.g., OSHA 30, NFPA 70E) preferred
- Technical Skills: Strong knowledge and understanding of lockout/tagout procedures and requirements, arc flash and shock hazard analyses, electrical energy control procedures.
Pay: $90,000.00 - $150,000.00 per year
