We are seeking a highly competent, compassionate, and clinically strong Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC) to join our multidisciplinary outpatient team. This role is focused exclusively on outpatient psychiatric services and requires advanced diagnostic skills, psychopharmacology expertise, and strong documentation proficiency.

Position Summary

The PMHNP provides comprehensive psychiatric evaluation, diagnosis, medication management, and ongoing treatment for patients with mental health and co-occurring disorders in an outpatient setting. The provider will manage a caseload of scheduled patients, collaborate with therapists and case managers, and ensure documentation supports medical necessity and regulatory compliance.

This role requires strong independent clinical judgment while working collaboratively under the supervision or partnership of the Medical Director, as required by Florida law and organizational policy.

Core Responsibilities1. Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluations

  • Conduct thorough psychiatric evaluations including:
  • Detailed psychiatric history
  • Medical history review
  • Substance use history
  • Family psychiatric history
  • Psychosocial assessment
  • Mental Status Examination (MSE)
  • Suicide and homicide risk assessment
  • Utilize DSM-5-TR criteria to establish accurate diagnoses.
  • Identify differential diagnoses and rule out substance-induced or medical-related psychiatric conditions.
  • Develop initial treatment recommendations supported by clinical findings.

2. Medication Management & Psychopharmacology

  • Prescribe and manage psychotropic medications in accordance with:
  • Florida Board of Nursing regulations
  • DEA regulations
  • Controlled substance laws
  • Monitor medication efficacy, side effects, and compliance.
  • Adjust medication regimens based on patient response and clinical presentation.
  • Address polypharmacy risks and potential drug interactions.
  • Provide patient education regarding:
  • Medication benefits and risks
  • Black box warnings
  • Adherence expectations
  • Monitoring requirements
  • Utilize the Florida PDMP for controlled substance monitoring.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory tests for medication management (e.g., lithium levels, metabolic panels, A1C, lipid panels).

3. Outpatient Treatment Planning

  • Develop individualized, measurable, and medically necessary treatment plans.
  • Establish clear goals with defined timelines and outcome measures.
  • Coordinate care with therapists providing psychotherapy services.
  • Provide brief therapeutic interventions during medication management visits when clinically appropriate.
  • Refer patients to higher levels of care when clinically indicated.

4. Documentation & Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and compliant documentation in the electronic health record (EHR).
  • Ensure documentation includes:
  • Chief complaint
  • History of present illness
  • Mental status exam
  • Risk assessment
  • Diagnosis (ICD-10 compliant)
  • Medical decision-making
  • Treatment plan
  • Ensure documentation supports:
  • Medical necessity
  • Medicaid and Medicare billing compliance
  • CPT coding accuracy
  • Adhere to:
  • HIPAA Privacy & Security standards
  • AHCA and CMS guidelines
  • Florida Medicaid documentation requirements
  • Participate in chart audits and quality improvement initiatives.

5. Telehealth Services (If Applicable)

  • Provide outpatient psychiatric services via secure telehealth platforms.
  • Ensure compliance with telehealth regulations and privacy standards.
  • Maintain professional telemedicine etiquette and documentation standards.

6. Collaboration & Team Participation

  • Work collaboratively with:
  • Medical Director
  • Licensed Therapists
  • Case Managers
  • Administrative staff
  • Participate in interdisciplinary case discussions.
  • Provide consultation for complex cases when appropriate.
  • Support continuity of care through appropriate referrals and follow-up planning.

Patient Population Served

The PMHNP will provide outpatient psychiatric care to individuals with:

  • Major Depressive Disorder
  • Bipolar Disorder
  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder
  • Panic Disorder
  • PTSD and trauma-related disorders
  • ADHD
  • Schizophrenia and psychotic disorders
  • Personality disorders
  • Co-occurring substance use disorders (outpatient level)
  • Geriatric psychiatric conditions including dementia-related behavioral disturbances

QualificationsRequired Education & Licensure

  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP)
  • Board Certified Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP-BC)
  • Active and unrestricted Florida APRN license
  • Active DEA registration
  • Eligible for Medicare and Florida Medicaid credentialing
  • Current BLS/CPR certification

Preferred Experience

  • Minimum 2+ years outpatient psychiatric experience preferred
  • Experience treating diverse populations across the lifespan
  • Experience with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders
  • Familiarity with EHR systems
  • Experience providing telepsychiatry services
