Description of Work Unit
Medical Services
The Medical Clinic at the CSU Health Network provides acute and chronic care to CSU students by appointments and on a walk-in basis for urgent concerns. Primary care physicians, physician assistants, and nurse practitioners care for students, with emphasis on preventive care, education, and continuity. The medical staff are supported by a full range of laboratory, radiology, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychiatry, optometry, and nutrition services on site, behavioral health and integrated care with counseling staff enhances the treatment of students with behavioral health concerns. Minor procedures are performed in the clinic. The Medical Clinic provides services between the hours of 8:00 am – 5:00 pm Monday-Friday, providing attractive work schedules for staff.

Position Summary
The Psychiatrist – PRN works as a provider of psychiatric care and reports directly to the Director of Psychiatry Services.

The Psychiatrist – PRN provides care for patients with acute and chronic psychiatric conditions, including substance use problems and complex case management in collaboration with medical providers and therapeutic counseling providers. This position provides psychiatric assessments and management, laboratory orders to determine appropriate medication management, and interpreting tests and documenting care in the electronic medical records; assesses patients’ progress and modifies treatment plans accordingly; initiates emergency hospitalizations for patients in crisis for their safety and stabilization when needed; refers patients to the community providers when needed; provides telepsychiatry services through the phone/video conferencing if needed; and collaborates with others within and outside of the CSU Health Network to ensure that patients receive optimal care.

The Psychiatrist – PRN is a Temporary Hourly position, works a schedule of 0-40 hours per week, and works a variable schedule with no guaranteed hours.

Health Network follows CDC guidelines for Employee Health in a healthcare setting, including proof of vaccinations. Employees must show proof of compliance/willingness to comply by start date.

Position Minimum Qualifications
Education/Certification
  • MD or DO degree
  • Possession of a current, unrestricted Colorado Medical License, or the ability to obtain by the start date
  • Board certified in psychiatry
  • Current DEA number for authorization of prescriptive privileges, or the ability to obtain by the start date

Preferred Qualifications
Experience
  • Broad range of clinical experience that encompasses multiple diagnoses, including mood and anxiety disorders, schizophrenia and psychosis, substance use disorders, eating disorders, personality disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, and trauma-informed care
  • Experience caring for a college population
  • Experience working as an outpatient Staff Psychiatrist and providing consultation with medical and counseling providers
  • Experience or willingness to work in an integrated multidisciplinary health care setting
  • Experience working with an electronic health record system
Knowledge, Skills, Ability, Other Characteristics
  • Collaborative mindset to provide consultation to psychiatry team members, other disciplines within the CSU Health Network integrated practice student health model, and community care entities
  • Excellent organizational, interpersonal, listening, verbal, and written communication skills
  • Interest in the wellness of students and their family members/support systems and respect for the role of patients in the decision-making process
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information in accordance with policies of the CSU Health Network, Colorado State University, state, federal and HIPAA requirements

Duty/Responsibility
  • Provides outpatient adult and occasional adolescent psychiatric evaluations, medication management, management of side effects and brief psychotherapy if appropriate.
  • Responsible for ordering medical testing and providing interpretation of same, documenting findings and initiating patients care plans
  • Responsible for assessing progress of patients and modifying treatment accordingly
  • Completes electronic medical record documentation on time according to CSUHN policies
  • Shares responsibility with other psychiatric providers for daily coverage of urgent appointment and selective clinics if necessary. These clinics include, but are not limited to iTEAM, Transgender Healthcare Team, Eating Disorder Team and DAY Programs (Drug/Alcohol treatment)
  • Evaluates and institutes emergency hospitalization procedures of patients in crisis for their safety and stabilization
  • Refers patients to community psychiatric practitioners or other specialized services/clinics as necessary
  • Serves as a consultation/liaison psychiatrist for other providers
  • Works with nurses /medical assistants/ other health technicians for care coordination, medication refills, and otherwise optimizing patient care needs
  • Consults with the Counseling Services and medical providers at the CSU Health Network regarding patients in accordance with established guidelines
  • Participates in integrated health care delivery systems by seeking collaboration and being an active member of the team
  • Provides telepsychiatry services remotely, when needed, via video/phone conferencing with the patient/their family
  • Promotes the equality of the mental health care for all patients
  • Other duties as assigned
