PT GENERAL (Library Intern)

DEFINITION/SELECTION PROCESS

The City of Lompoc is seeking candidates for an intern position at the Lompoc Library.

The PT General - Library Intern position will work in the youth department, helping with the Lunch at the Library and Summer Reading programs, under the supervision of the youth department staff. This is a seasonal position. All training is provided on-the-job.
EXAMINATION PROCESS: Based upon screening of the City application, résumé, and response to supplemental question, applicants whose qualifications best meet the requirements of the position will be invited to the examination process. This process may include, but is not limited to: oral interview process. Those candidates who pass the examination process are placed on an eligibility list from which the final selection will be made.

INTERVIEWS WILL BE HELD ON: APRIL 9th & 10, 2026
SELECTION PROCESS: As authorized by City policy, applicants being considered for hire in this position are subject to fingerprinting for purposes of investigating criminal history background, as part of the employment screening process.

Failure in any part of the examination or selection processes will disqualify a candidate from further consideration.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/EXAMPLES OF DUTIES


The following duties are typical of this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the duties and/or may be required to perform specific additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

Typical duties include bringing the books and other library materials from the outside book drop into the library; pushing shelving carts and placing books onto the library shelves in correct order; straightening shelves; checking shelves to be sure material is in the correct location; picking up books and materials from around library and returning to their correct locations; finding books on the shelf from a list of materials; identifying damaged books or books from other libraries for appropriate action; minor cleaning including picking up trash and dusting shelves; closing windows, checking doors and other duties required to secure the library for the evening; and performs related work as required.
Specific duties may be required in different departments. These may include use of the copy machine, labeling shelves or materials, cutting out materials for children's programs, and other work assigned by the supervisor.

TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS


Include any combination of training, education and experience which demonstrates an ability to perform the duties of the position. The typical qualifying entrance background is:

Applicants must be actively enrolled in high school.

KNOWLEDGE OF
: English language, 9th grade reading level required; and basic math.
ABILITY TO: Bend, reach with hands and arms, push, pull, kneel, lift weights of up to 25 lbs on a regular basis, stand for up to 4 hours.

  • At-Will designation refers to full-time employees in certain classifications and all part-time, temporary employees. The unclassified, non-budgeted employee is at-will, has no probationary period, and may be rejected at any time without cause and without the right of appeal.

  • Part-time, temporary appointments are "at-will" assignments, not subject to the competitive service process, and serve at the direction and discretion of the assigned department.

  • Part-time, temporary appointments are not eligible to receive vacation, holidays, or any other benefits provided to budgeted, regular status employees.

  • Part-time, temporary appointments, including PT PERS are eligible to accrue paid sick leave up to 5 days or 40 hours of accrued paid sick leave per year. Any accrued sick leave cannot be cashed out upon termination. (PT Retiree Annuitants are not eligible to accrue paid sick leave.)

  • Part-time, temporary appointments can be made for a period of up to 19 hours per week and cannot exceed 1,000 hours worked within one fiscal year without prior approval.
