The Missoula County Health Department is seeking a PUBLIC HEALTH DATA ANALYST to join their team. This position is responsible for the coordination of data collection, analysis, and evaluation activities, including tracking program outcomes, conducting needs assessments, and developing reports for quarterly and annual submissions for the Missoula City-County Health Department.

Representative Examples of Work

Assists in surveillance and data evaluation for Health Promotion, Evaluates quality and efficiency of surveillance systems. Makes recommendations for enhancements. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of interventions and programs targeting substance use and behavioral health trends and risk factors, strengths and weaknesses. Provides technical assistance on issues regarding surveillance, interventions, epidemiologic, program evaluation, statistical analysis, and data interpretation. Cleans, processes, and analyzes data using statistical software and other analytical tools, with a focus on substance use, mental health, and behavioral health trends and outcomes. Collects, cleans, transforms, validates, organizes, and analyzes data within large, complex databases, with a high attention to detail for understanding and improving organizational performance. Collaborates with public health professionals, researchers, and policymakers to identify data-driven solutions to challenges related to substance use, mental health, and behavioral health. Collects and manages datasets from various sources, including local, state and federal data collections surveillance databases and surveys to create reports to support communication of best practices, identify areas of improvement and provide statistical analyses when appropriate. Conducts health promotion programs and public policy presentations. Coordinates and supports local data collection efforts, including youth surveys (e.g., Montana Prevention Needs Assessment and Youth Risk Behavior Survey), community and youth focus groups and interviews, and other qualitative or quantitative methods, to ensure accurate and complete datasets for analysis. Develops and conducts various training related to data analysis, epidemiological and program evaluation-related issues. Develop reports, presentations, and visualizations to communicate findings to stakeholders, decision-makers, and community partners. Identifies health trends, problems, and resource needs in the community and assures their consideration in strategic planning, quality improvement, performance management, policymaking and program development. Monitors rural, city, and county health trends, youth substance use, and mental health indicators to identify disparities and support prevention strategies. Participates in quality improvement projects and strategic work plans. Works within the incident command structure during emergencies. Participates in strategic and emergency planning, quality improvement, and accreditation documentation and activities. Ensures accreditation requirements are met. Provides data insights and presentations for coalitions, schools, and community groups to inform decision-making and community prevention strategies. Serves as part of incident command during emergencies. Participates in department-wide strategic activities.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Requires a Bachelor’s degree. Desired fields of study include Public Health, Epidemiology, Statistics, Health Informatics, Social Sciences or a closely related degree.
  • Requires one year’s experience in Data Analysis: Analyzing complex data sets using various statistical methods and tools to identify trends, patterns, and relationships related to public health issues. Proficiency in using statistical software packages (e.g. Statistical Analysis System, Power BI or Statistical Package for the Social Sciences and data visualization tools. Knowledge of program evaluation techniques and their application in assessing public health interventions, policies, and initiatives.
  • SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Requires immunizations or proof of immunity to certain infectious diseases, and a TB test.

Physical/Environmental Demands

This position works in a typical office environment using a computer, keyboard and related software. Occasional travel may be required. May require attending meetings or working outside of the normal business hours.
